Lingfield Park Racecourse Events & Fixtures
A unique venue in that both Flat turf and All-Weather racing action takes place here alongside National Hunt events, races at Lingfield today started in 1890. The future King Edward VII opened the track some 20 miles southeast of Epsom Downs and around 30 miles from Kempton Park and Sandown Park. Initially, it was just jumps racing staged at the course but The Jockey Club quickly added Flat races in 1894.
Flooding has historically been an issue at Lingfield Park, so an All-Weather was introduced. In 2001, the Equitrack surface was replaced with another artificial underlay in Polytrack. The likes of Chelmsford and Southwell also have All-Weather races at them too. Lingfield races today are thus highly varied, offering all codes of British horse racing under Rules depending on the time of year.
The turf course at Lingfield is a sharp and undulating left-handed track with a full circuit being roughly a mile-and-a-half. Triangular in shape, the chase course is on the outside with the hurdles track inside of that. Besides the round course, Lingfield Park also has a straight of seven-and-a-half furlongs.
The run-in off the home turn is uphill and less than half-a-mile. Steeplechasers who may go on to the Cheltenham Festival tackle open ditches on the side of the course and in the back straight. All-Weather racing fans have to look across the turf track as the Polytrack is inside that with a circuit being just over a mile-and-a-quarter with a chute for races over a mile-and-a-half.
Lingfield Winter Million
In 2022, the Winter Million Lingfield meeting was held for the first time. The track’s owners, the Arena Racing Company (ARC), and various sponsors and partners drummed up around £1,000,000 in prize money for the races held over both jumps and on the All-Weather across the penultimate weekend of January.
The Lingfield Winter Million was well-supported as a result and can be regarded as a success. If the meeting continues to grow, it could help to tackle the lull in British horse racing between the Christmas to New Year period and the spring festivals.
