Why Betting on the Cheltenham Gold Cup Matters

It’s stating the obvious but Gold Cup betting odds are a big deal for the bookies. Second only on the Horse Racing Levy Board’s top 10 list of betting races by turnover to the Grand National, this elite event is the highest level of competition for staying steeplechasers every year.

Covering two full circuits of Cheltenham Racecourse and a distance of an extended three-and-a-quarter miles, Gold Cup odds are available all year round. This is because there are a number of official and unofficial trials taking place throughout the jumps season.

Each of those, including previous Cheltenham results to look back over, shape the market. Betting for the Cheltenham Gold Cup has plenty of influencing factors in it besides form, though. There is also the past record of racehorse trainers to consider.

Here is more information about the entire field, whatever their price in the Gold Cup betting market, as they prepare for the blue riband event of steeplechasing.

Bryan Drew silks1. Bravemansgame

  • Age: 9
  • Rating: 170
  • Trainer: Paul Nicholls
  • Jockey: Harry Cobden
  • Form: 1/36/211132/11114/1123-222
  • Cheltenham Form: 32
  • Odds: 18/1 (from 14/1)

Charlie Hall and King George VI Chase winner last season, but five defeats since. Not disgraced when runner-up in the 2023 Gold Cup, but odds-on losses at Wetherby and Haydock, and being unable to defend his Kempton crown latest raise question marks about stamina.

Corach Rambler silks2. Corach Rambler

  • Age: 10
  • Rating: 159
  • Trainer: Lucinda Russell
  • Jockey: Derek Fox
  • Form: PP5/21161/3114U1/5411-53
  • Cheltenham Form: 111
  • Odds: 18/1 (from 20/1)

Three-time Cheltenham winner at 3m 1f including the last two editions of the Ultima Handicap Chase during the Festival. Took form to a new level with Grand National success last spring. Connections plotted route back to Aintree that takes in the blue riband event, rather than a tilt at an Ultima hat-trick off topweight. Can’t be ruled out on course form and there are no stamina concerns.

Mulryan silks3. Fastorslow

  • Age: 8
  • Rating: 170
  • Trainer: Martin Brassil
  • Jockey: JJ Slevin
  • Form: 121/2002/25521-12
  • Cheltenham Form: 22
  • Odds: 8/1 (from 11/2)

Two narrow defeats at past Cheltenham Festivals in the 2022 Coral Cup and Ultima Handicap Chase last season behind Grand National hero Corach Rambler. Taken form to a new level since with Punchestown Gold Cup and John Durkan wins, besting Galopin Des Champs twice. Has major claims on that evidence, but old rival turned the tables on him in the Irish Gold Cup.

Mrs Audrey Turley silks4. Galopin Des Champs

  • Age: 8
  • Rating: 179
  • Trainer: Willie Mullins
  • Jockey: Paul Townend
  • Form: 12P61/111F1/1112-311
  • Cheltenham Form: 1F1
  • Odds: 10/11 (from 11/10)

Two from three at the Cheltenham Festival. Justified strong favouritism when routing Bravemansgame in last season’s Gold Cup. Beaten twice subsequently by Fastorslow, but has since gained revenge on that one at the Dublin Racing Festival and all roads lead back to Prestbury Park now. Still the one to beat on impressive Savills Chase and Irish Gold Cup wins.

Robcour silks5. Gentlemansgame

  • Age: 8
  • Rating: 160
  • Trainer: Mouse Morris
  • Jockey: Darragh O’Keeffe
  • Form: 1123/2071/31-21
  • Cheltenham Form: Unraced at track
  • Odds: 28/1 (from 16/1)

Lowered the colours of Bravemansgame in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby, then given the winter off and freshened up for this. Previous Leopardstown defeat of I Am Maximus, who has since won the Irish Grand National, Drinmore Novice and Bobbyjo Chases around Fairyhouse, reads well in relation to this. The dark horse in the Gold Cup betting who chased home Galopin Des Champs in a 3m Grade 1 novice hurdle at Punchestown earlier in his career.

Robcour silks6. Gerri Colombe

  • Age: 8
  • Rating: 167
  • Trainer: Gordon Elliott
  • Jockey: Jack Kennedy
  • Form: 1/11/11/11121-12
  • Cheltenham Form: 2
  • Odds: 8/1 (from 10/1)

Suffered first career defeat to date at Cheltenham in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase when given too much to do. Showed stamina to almost get up from off the pace that day and again to win at Down Royal on reappearance with a flatter track catching out when runner-up to Galopin Des Champs over Christmas latest. Longer trip promises to suit. Still of the leading contenders and might be each way value.

Hewick silks7. Hewick – NON-RUNNER

  • Age: 9
  • Rating: 169
  • Trainer: Shark Hanlon
  • Jockey: Jordan Gainford
  • Form: UFF/5B760024/90011P2/124P2121P1/21U1F1-401
  • Cheltenham Form: F
  • Odds: Non-Runner

Heavy faller when headed two out in last season’s race. Remarkably versatile horse that stays further with a bet365 Gold Cup, Galway Plate, Oaksey Chase and King George on his CV. Those notable successes are all right-handed, but has also won the American Grand National over hurdles racing anticlockwise. Latest triumph at Kempton from off the pace means he’s entitled to have another crack at Cheltenham.

Malcolm Denmark silks8. Jungle Boogie

  • Age: 10
  • Rating: 152
  • Trainer: Henry De Bromhead
  • Jockey: Rachael Blackmore
  • Form: 11/1/41
  • Cheltenham Form: Unraced at track
  • Odds: 33/1 (from 50/1)

Lightly-raced horse that won the Grade 3 New Year’s Day Chase at Tramore latest. That event has been an unorthodox, but successful way of preparing horses for a crack at the Gold Cup. Unraced beyond 2m 7f and every single start of career has been right-handed. An unknown quantity who could be anything. Yard has won this in recent years with A Plus Tard and Minella Indo.

DFA Racing L'Homme Presse silks9. L’Homme Presse

  • Age: 9
  • Rating: 168
  • Trainer: Venetia Williams
  • Jockey: Charlie Deutsch
  • Form: 52/16/111113/1U-12
  • Cheltenham Form: 11
  • Odds: 12/1 (from 16/1)

Winner of the 2022 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the Festival. Injured when unseated in the last season’s King George, but two good efforts over shorter distances since. Made a winning return in the 2m 6f Fleur De Lys Chase at Lingfield, then not disgraced in the 2m 5f Ascot Chase latest. Unusual way to prepare a horse for the Gold Cup, but one of the best British hopes nonetheless.

Ricci silks10. Monkfish

  • Age: 10
  • Rating: 164
  • Trainer: Willie Mullins
  • Jockey: Danny Mullins or Patrick Mullins
  • Form: P/1/22111/1111/2/29-1
  • Cheltenham Form: 11
  • Odds: 28/1 (from 33/1)

Had the world at his feet when winning the RSA Chase here three years ago. Subsequent injuries meant more than 700 days off the track. Only run in hurdle races since returning to action landing the Grade 2 Galmoy Hurdle on heavy ground at Gowran Park in January latest. Outside shout on back form, but hard to know what ability for steeplechasing remains.

Botox Has silks11. Nassalam

  • Age: 7
  • Rating: 161
  • Trainer: Gary Moore
  • Jockey: Niall Houlihan
  • Form:211220/11221/56307-411
  • Cheltenham Form: 0630
  • Odds: 28/1 (from 50/1)

Wide-margin Welsh Grand National winner at Chepstow over Christmas when sluicing up on heavy ground. Every drop of rain that falls enhances his claims. Although the Grand National at Aintree is the long-term target, he can’t be totally written off if the going is really testing.

The Real Whacker silks12. The Real Whacker

  • Age: 8
  • Rating: 162
  • Trainer: Patrick Neville
  • Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies
  • Form: 612/0111-P42
  • Cheltenham Form: 0111P2
  • Odds: 50/1 (from 20/1)

Hugely progressive as a novice chaser last season, winning three times at Cheltenham. Pulled up in the Paddy Power Gold Cup on reappearance, then fourth in the King George, but a better second in the Cotswold Chase on Festival Trials Day latest. Was hard to catch from the front over fences before, but that style of racing vulnerable at this distance. Gold Cup betting odds suggest others appeal more.

Joe and Marie Donnelly silksShishkin – WITHDRAWN

  • Age: 10
  • Rating: 173
  • Trainer: Nicky Henderson
  • Jockey: Nico de Boinville
  • Form: 3/11/F111/11111/11P/3121-RU1
  • Cheltenham Form: 11P2
  • Odds: N/A – Withdrawn

Dual Cheltenham Festival winner and Ryanair Chase runner-up who went on to Aintree Bowl success in the spring. Refused to race in first-time cheekpieces on reappearance at Ascot, then unlucky to stumble after jumping two out fine still in front in the King George. At least his warm-up went to plan when landing the Denman Chase at Newbury latest. Talented but becoming increasingly quirky and enigmatic.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting Preview 2024

Cheltenham Gold Cup betting

Now that we’ve looked at the Gold Cup betting and odds, it’s time to assess the form behind the prices. A glance at horse racing news and the table of past winners further down this page shows Willie Mullins has three recent wins in this feature race. He trains the favourite and last year’s hero, Galopin Des Champs. With a CV that includes the Fairyhouse Gold Cup, John Durkan at Punchestown, two Irish Gold Cup sand now Savills Chase successes at Leopardstown, he sets the standard.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup trip was a step into the unknown stamina wise last season, but Galopin Des Champs dispelled all doubts about that. He also quickened away from Gerri Colombe stylishly over the Christmas period With strong market confidence behind him, he comes here as the form horse after beating old rival Fastorslow at Leopardstown.

That one is next in the Gold Cup betting on his Punchestown Gold Cup and John Durkan wins. Runner-up to subsequent Grand National winner Corach Rambler in a Cheltenham Festival handicap last season, Martin Brassil’s runner has since taken his form to a whole new level.

Fastorslow beat the then holder of the King George VI Chase in Bravemansgame and Galopin Des Champs at the end of the campaign. He confirmed that form in the John Durkan back at Punchestown on reappearance, but swerved testing ground over Christmas. He found Galopin Des Champs too good in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown, but still looks the one most likely to chase him home.

Gold Cup Ante Post Betting Suggests Shishkin, Gerri Colombe & Hewick Have Claims

Past Gold Cup contenders like A Plus Yard, Bravemansgame, Noble Yeats and Protektorat all appear to have fallen by the wayside. Clinging stubbornly to his spot in the market is Shishkin, however, who refused to race at Ascot before stumbling some strides after jumping two out in front in the King George. His Denman Chase success around Newbury should put him spot on for this, however.

Open to further progress at staying trips, meanwhile, is last season’s Broadway Novices’ Chase runner-up Gerri Colombe. Gordon Elliott knows what it takes to train a Gold Cup winner after saddling Don Cossack to glory. Gerri Colombe drifted in the market, however, after being put in his place by Galopin Des Champ at Leopardstown over Christmas.

With the British staying steeplechase division in real disarray, however, plenty of experts giving Gold Cup tips highlight Gerri Colombe as a solid each-way play for the race. The flatter course at Leopardstown may not have played to his strengths like Cheltenham or Down Royal, where he landed his reappearance with a real show of stamina.

Those looking for a bigger price in the Gold Cup betting this year will look to the remarkably versatile Hewick. He is a lively outsider on Cheltenham betting sites for the plucky underdog that is trainer Shark Hanlon. Hewick has plundered the bet365 Gold Cup, Galway Plate and now the King George, but is no slouch racing left-handed either.

If t he ground comes up good during the Festival, then Hanlon will have real hope of pulling off a shock result. Hewick fell when headed two fences from home in this race 12 months ago, so is out to make amends on the back of his sensational Kempton victory on Boxing Day.

Bravemansgame & L’Homme Presse Opposable

The aforementioned Bravemansgame hasn’t won in five subsequent starts after his 2023 King George victory. Gentlemansgame bested him at Wetherby on reappearance and that one has been laid out for a crack at this. L’Homme Presse is the other leading UK contender, but Venetia Williams’ horse needs to prove his stamina.

He was entitled to win at Lingfield, but then couldn’t go the pace required to catch Pic D’Orhy in the Ascot Chase. It is unusual these days to run a horse so close the Gold Cup. L’Homme Presse has stamina to prove as well. At bigger odds, Corach Rambler likes Cheltenham, but a defence of his Grand National crown looks the main spring target.

Nassalam also has Aintree ambitions on the back of his Welsh Grand National victory. Heavy going is a plus for him, so if there’s continuing rain during the Festival, he could easily outrun his odds. The most difficult horses to get a handle on are the unexposed and lightly-raced Jungle Boogie and the dark horse Gentlemansgame.

Monkfish hasn’t jumped a fence in public for three years, while The Real Whacker hasn’t replicated his excellent novice chase form. It is hard to see something at a big price getting in amongst the market principals, for all some have questions to answer. Betting on the Gold Cup – History & Past Winners

Cheltenham Gold Cup betting greats Denman and Kauto Star

As the below table shows, nine favourites in the betting for the Cheltenham Gold Cup have won since 2022. However, in the dozen most recent renewals, the market leader has only five victories. That is a less than 50 per cent success rate over that period. It also reflects a broad general trend in horse racing where the favourite wins races on average only around a third of the time.

An even more recent sample brings their record up, however. Three favourites in the last five Gold Cup renewals delivered. Studying five-year trends creates a different impression. A longer term view suggests the performance of Gold Cup betting favourites is a mixed back The winners table shows you the age, jockey and trainer, plus the year and starting price (SP). Other Gold Cup Betting Races

There is a natural preoccupation with Cheltenham Gold Cup betting when people talk about the Gold Cup. In fact, there are plenty of other Gold Cups in the sport of British and Irish horse racing today. Many events have built up over time. Some of these event predate the Cheltenham Gold Cup, first run as a steeplechase in 1924.

Prior to that, there was a Flat stakes race of the same name over three miles held initially in 1819. Some of the other Gold Cups are steeplechases and others Group 1 contests or valuable handicaps on the level. Each of these are well worth a watch on live horse racing streaming sites for different reasons. Helping you make sense of every Gold Cup in British and Irish horse racing, check out the other races:

Races In Ireland

There are currently four horse racing events in the Emerald Isle with Gold Cup in their title. The first of these is the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown, one of the feature contests at the Dublin Racing Festival in early February. It takes place over an extended three miles and is a valuable race in its own right. This gives top staying steeplechasers in the Emerald Isle one final run some six weeks before crossing the Irish Sea for the Cheltenham Festival.

At Fairyhouse, meanwhile, there is a two-and-a-half-mile novice chase enjoying Grade 1 status during the big Easter Festival on the day before the Irish Grand National. Previously known as the Powers Gold Cup and Ryanair Gold Cup, it doesn’t have a fixed date. This is because Easter can be as early as the end of March or late as mid-April. The Fairyhouse Gold Cup is thus an alternative target to some of the top novice chases on both sides of the Irish Sea in the spring.

Perhaps the biggest of all Emerald Isle races with this in the title, though, is the Punchestown Gold Cup. Traditionally on the last Wednesday in April, it is the feature race on the second day of Ireland’s end of jumps season extravaganza. As previous horse racing results tell us, Cheltenham Gold Cup winners often go on to the Punchestown Festival for this extended three-mile contest. Kicking King, War Of Attrition and Sizing John have all won both in the same season.

On the Flat in Ireland, meanwhile, there is the Tattersalls Gold Cup. A Group 1 contest for older horses over an extended mile-and-a-quarter, it is the big race for four-year-olds and up during the Irish Guineas Festival on the third weekend in May.

Ascot Gold Cup Betting

By far the most famous race on the Flat that is a Gold Cup is the one at Royal Ascot. A historic two-and-a-half-mile Group 1 race first held in 1807, it is the centrepiece staying race in the whole British horse racing summer calendar. Run on the Thursday of the royal meeting in mid-June, whatever their Ascot Gold Cup betting odds might be, winners are guaranteed a future career at stud as sires of National Hunt horses. The irony is the Ascot Gold Cup could produce Cheltenham Gold Cup winners in years to come.

Ayr Gold Cup Betting

Even older than the Ascot race but at the opposite end of the spectrum distance wise, the Ayr Gold Cup is a six-furlong sprint Heritage Handicap. First run way back in 1804, cut to its current distance in 1908 and held during the middle of September, the race is usually so oversubscribed that there are two consolation races – the Ayr Silver Cup and Ayr Bronze Cup. Open to three-year-olds and up, Ayr Gold Cup betting odds are always competitive because of the sheer size of the field. There are 24 runners in this wide-open cavalry charge.

Haldon Gold Cup

The first Gold Cup in any UK jumps season is the Grade 2 Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter. Run as a limited handicap chase over almost two-and-a-quarter miles, this is traditionally a midweek race rather than on a weekend. Winning the Haldon Gold Cup helped the careers of many top horses. It remains a stepping stone to other races, however, despite a rich roll of honour.

Paddy Power Gold Cup Betting

There are actually three races with Gold Cup in their title that take place at Cheltenham. The first of those in the order of the National Hunt season is the Paddy Power Gold Cup. This Premier Handicap chase over an extended two-and-a-half miles is the big betting race on the Saturday of Cheltenham’s three-day November Meeting. Originally sponsored by Mackeson Stout, this race has also been partnered by Murphy’s Brewery, tailors Thomas Pink and BetVictor. The Paddy Power Gold Cup betting usually has a very open look to it.

Coral Gold Cup

Known for most of its history as Hennessy Gold Cup, the ardent spirits company ended their sponsorship of the big 3m 2f handicap chase at Newbury in 2017. Called the Ladbrokes Trophy for the next five years, it became the Coral Gold Cup in 2022. A Premier Handicap that headlines the two-day Winter Carnival held at the end of November or start of December, the last horse to win both this and the big one at Cheltenham was Native River. The Coral Gold Cup retains huge prestige despite the name changes.

December Gold Cup

Another Cheltenham race with Gold Cup in its name, the December Gold Cup has also had various sponsors down the years. Run on the New Course rather than the Old Course, where the Paddy Power takes place, this is also an extended two-and-a-half-mile Premier Handicap chase. Originally sponsored by Massey Ferguson, the most notable recent partner for the December Gold Cup has been Caspian Caviar. When their sponsorship ended, the race found new partners in the Racing Post. The December Gold Cup takes place on the Saturday of Cheltenham’s International Meeting.

Greatwood Gold Cup

Newbury also has its own Grade 3 handicap chase over two-and-a-half miles in the Greatwood Gold Cup. Run on either the last Saturday in February or first in March, it takes place during a lull where arguably better horses prepare for the Cheltenham Festival. This race carries part of the same name as the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, a two-mile Premier Handicap run during the November Meeting at Cheltenham.

bet365 Gold Cup

On the final day of the British jumps season at Sandown Park, the bet365 Gold Cup takes place. Over a longer distance of an extended three-and-a-half miles than the Cheltenham race, for many years this event was called the Whitbread Gold Cup. A staying handicap chase with Premier Handicap status, this race brings the curtain down on the core National Hunt season in the UK.

London Gold Cup

This is where things start to get confusing. There are currently two races, one over jumps and one on the Flat, called the London Gold Cup. Both are handicaps. The jumps race is a Premier Handicap steeplechase at Ascot over three miles, run on the last Saturday in October or first in November that is better known by its sponsored title of the Sodexo Gold Cup. On the Flat, meanwhile, the London Gold Cup Handicap is a mile-and-a-quarter stakes race for three-year-olds on the Lockinge card during the middle Saturday in May.

Conclusion

That brings our look at betting on the Cheltenham Gold Cup to a close. This stupendous race has it all. Intrigue, drama and the crowning of a champion at the end. Gold Cup betting should always be an exciting experience for punters with the race at the zenith of the sport.
