There is a new concussion protocol in place for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which is already in question after an incident during England vs Iran today.
Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was forced into substitution after a challenge with his own teammate just ten minutes into the game and appeared to suffer a significant injury.
However, despite the medic team’s best efforts, the 30-year-old insisted he was ready to play and continued before collapsing and signalling to the bench after a minute.

What Is The Concussion Protocol At The World Cup?
The FIFA Medical Concussion Protocol follows the credo “suspect and protect”. The protocol provides team doctors and medics with a step-by-step guide to dealing with concussions.
FIFA’s Medical Director, Dr Andrew Massey, says that the guide “begins with baseline screening of all players, and this gives the team doctor not only a chance to understand how an individual player’s brain normally operates but to educate that player on the gravity of concussive injuries”.

The official rules are that the medical team should examine the player and check for any tramua-like cuts, checking to see if there is any dizziness or sickness and carry out a concussion test.
If any loss of consciousness is detected or confirmed, the player is not allowed to continue and must be substituted.
