West Ham’s record signing Lucas Paqueta has certainly lived up to the hype since he arrived at the London Stadium last summer – but how do West Ham’s other biggest transfers compare?
With the January transfer window on the horizon, we at Sportslens have been comparing the biggest deals ever made by different Premier League clubs.
David Moyes has spent big on several occasions since becoming West Ham manager. But it hasn’t been without success, as the Hammers lifted the Europa Conference League earlier this year and have made the Europa League knockouts this season.
And with his side now up to eighth in the Premier League, they could well pursue some more expensive transfers in the upcoming window in order to push for Europe once more.
West Ham’s Most Expensive Transfers
Gianluca Scamacca – £35.5 million
One of West Ham’s most expensive signings was Gianluca Scamacca. Unfortunately, things never really worked out for the Italian in London.
Eight goals in 27 games doesn’t sound too bad, but with three of those in the Conference League, he didn’t really live up to his £35.5 million price tag.
Felipe Anderson – £36 Million
A former West Ham transfer record, Felipe Anderson was undoubtedly a good player when he signed.
But with the Brazil International managing just 25 goal involvements in 73 appearances, his somewhat underwhelming return saw him sold back to Lazio in 2021.
Mohammed Kudus – £38 million
The £38 million signing of Mohammed Kudus has so far proved to be a superb bit of business from West Ham.
The Ghanaian tore up trees for Ajax in last season’s Eredivisie, netting 11 goals in only 19 appearances. The 23-year-old has 12 in 24 this season – including one before he left Ajax in the summer.
Already with Champions League experience, Kudus has potential to become one of the best signings in West Ham’s recent history.
Sebastien Haller – £45 million
Sadly, not every marquee signing can be a success. Sebastien Haller has proved his ability since leaving West Ham, and scored an incredible 47 times in 66 Ajax games after moving on from East London.
But he could only muster 14 in 54 at West Ham, and never came close to justifying his huge transfer fee.
Haller, now at Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, has recently recovered from testicular cancer and returned to football – which is fantastic news and we wish him all the best.
Who Is West Ham’s Record Signing?
Lucas Paqueta – £51 million
West Ham’s most expensive signing ever is Lucas Paqueta. At £51 million, the Brazilian arrived in August 2022 with a great deal of attention.
Despite a slow start at the London Stadium, Paqueta now has 10 goals and 11 assists for West Ham. An integral part of David Moyes’ midfield, he has started to live up to his price tag.
Linked with a move to Manchester City which then fell through, the Irons faithful will be hoping to see him stay a little longer with the club.
West Ham Transfer Targets
Alessandro Buongiorno – Torino
As for potential arrivals this upcoming January, there are a few West Ham transfer rumours in circulation.
One possible move for David Moyes is to bring in a replacement for Angelo Ogbonna. The 35-year old’s time at West Ham could be coming to an end soon, and the club would need a new face through the door to fill the gap he will leave.
The name being touted to replace the former Juventus man is another Serie A player, Alessandro Buongiorno. With two senior Italy caps, the 24-year-old Torino player has been enjoying a good season.
At 6ft 4in tall, he is an imposing defender who would be a good signing. But with Torino demanding at least €30 million (£26 million), it remains to be seen if West Ham can complete the deal in January.
Matt O’Riley – Celtic
According to TEAMtalk, Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley is being looked at as a possible midfield option. West Ham reportedly face competition from Newcastle United and Leicester City for his signature, though.
It’s believed the 23-year-old would cost David Moyes in the region of £25 million, and would add some valuable competition and depth to the Irons midfield.
Ian Maatsen – Chelsea
Current left back Emerson Palmieri’s only competition as it stands is 29-year-old Aaron Cresswell. While Palmieri has been in great form, David Moyes could well bring in another player to provide cover and competition.
And who better than 21-year-old Chelsea youngster Ian Maatsen? On West Ham’s radar since the summer, Maatsen recently admitted he may have to leave Stamford Bridge in order to play regular first team football.
According to The Athletic, the Blues defender could be available for just £20 million, and has bags of potential to increase that value.
