Ghana and West Ham midfielder Mohammed Kudus has been urged to keep playing at a good level for his country ahead of the African Cup of Nations in January.

Kudus, who has been a part of the Black Stars since 2019, has made 30 appearances – scoring nine times. He missed out playing at AFCON in 2021 due to an injury sustained playing for Ajax.

The 23-year-old is set to make his debut in the competition for Ghana next month and he’s been in a fine run of form for Premier League side West Ham United.

Kudus has been especially prolific in the Europa League, scoring twice in four starts. He has three goals in seven starts in the English top-flight, most recently scoring the opener vs Crystal Palace almost two weeks ago.

Former Ghana international Augustine Arhinful, who previously represented the country at the international level, told GhanaWeb his team needs him to maintain his impressive record for success in the competition.

“I’m not surprised at all [by his impressive form] because when he first went to West Ham, we kept complaining about why the coach was not using him. The coach, who works with the team day in and day out, knew what he was doing,” Arhinful said.

His stunning scissor kick to equalise for the Hammers in a 3-2 defeat at Brentford was named the club’s Goal of the Month for November.

Before that goal, Kudus was one of two Ghanaians named on the 30-man shortlist to win the African Footballer of the Year award by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

In 2022/23, he scored 18 goals in all competitions for Eredivisie side Ajax. Despite Ghana’s early exit in last year’s Qatar World Cup, he bagged two goals and made one assist in the three group games.
