SportsLens can exclusively reveal that West Ham United are keeping tabs on Wilfried Gnonto and Steven Bergwijn, as the Hammers look to increase their attacking options for the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.
Wilfried Gnonto To West Ham
Wilfried Gnonto pushed for a transfer away from Leeds United at the start of the season and in recent times, has struggled to make the Whites starting line-up.
With that said, the Italian winger was in the starting XI for the FA Cup third round clash at Peterborough on Sunday (7th January) but lacked the spark and enthusiasm that had made him such an exciting Premier League player last year.
The 20-year-old has just one goal all season in the EFL Championship and has the same number of assists – and 12 months on from making his big breakthrough in England’s elite there is growing speculation over a return to the top-flight.
Fulham are among clubs that have also had an eye on Gnonto’s situation but West Ham are primed to make an enquiry in the coming days.
The Hammers considered him last summer so they want to see if his situation has changed since then, when Leeds refused to cash in on their star asset.
West Ham Interested In Steven Bergwijn
Ajax captain Steven Bergwijn is another West Ham January transfer target and boss David Moyes is understood to be a keen admirer of the Dutchman.
The Hammers are well informed on the skills and attributes of Bergwijn and are expected to ramp up their interest this week but other names are on the list too, including that of Gnonto – and sources close to Leeds believe any offer would really test the clubs’ resolve.
Michail Antonio has suffered an injury setback but the East Londoners were already on the the hunt for a new forward and have been searching for viable options.
Danny Ings is expected to leave as part of the squad reshuffle this month, if the terms around a move do not prove to be too tricky.
Ings is currently one of the highest earners at the club, picking up over £120,000-a-week and a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers has been touted.
It is true that Wolves are looking into the move as they seek a new centre-forward for the rest of the season – but negotiations will need to progress in the coming days for it to take shape.
Said Benrahma is also going to be leaving, with a search ongoing for the right club.
