The latest West Ham transfer exclusive has revealed that Kalvin Phillips has opened up to the prospect of joining the club, with a deal expected to be concluded this week.

Newcastle United had been the leaders in the race to sign Phillips this month but have hesitated to meet the demands set out by Manchester City, and that has allowed the Hammers to swoop in and make their own play for the defensive midfielder.

SportsLens recently revealed how David Moyes has driven the push to sign Phillips. Initially, they put the feelers out to understand whether he would have interest in the move and they were given encouragement on that front over the weekend.

Now, talks between clubs have been able to accelerate and on Monday lunchtime sources were indicating West Ham had put themselves in a very good position to complete a loan signing.

There are still the finer details to be completed, it is understood, but the East Londoners have intimated that they would like this to be a straight loan deal with no obligation to buy the player.

Newcastle had also wanted such an agreement too, although they had also shown an interest in having him on board long-term. The discussions around a loan fee derailed the discussions slightly.

One of the sticking points from the Magpies on the loan fee is believed to have been around the fact they felt Phillips would need time to get up to full speed in terms of fitness and form but, Man City see no problem on that front – given he has been thoroughly professional and has maintained high standards during the season to keep himself in top condition.

Their interest has not totally fallen away, but Phillips is open minded about completing a loan transfer this week so that he can get on with playing regular Premier League football again.

We reported last week that there was every belief Phillips would make a move soon as the former Leeds United man is keen to give himself the best chance of making Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.
