Wales legend Gareth Bale has today announced his retirement from club and international football with immediate effect, aged 33.
The Cardiff born star led Wales to their first World Cup in 64 years at the end of last year, and it was a fitting way to go out, despite them being knocked out in the group stages.
Bale released a heartfelt statement on his Twitter, announcing that he was hanging up his boots, saying “I feel incredibly fortunate to have realised my dream of playing the sport I love.”

Having started his career on the South Coast in Southampton, before moving to Spurs, where he established himself as one of the hottest young talents in the world. Bale went on to have a fruitful career full of ups and downs, winning four Champions Leagues, two La Liga titles and three Club World Cups at Real Madrid, whilst also becoming the face of Welsh football and captaining his side at a Euros, and World Cup.
His time at Real Madrid never ended on the best terms, however he still had some special moments in the Spanish capital, before going on loan to his former side Spurs where he made 20 appearances in the 2020/21 season and eventually ending his career at LAFC, where he scored the equalising goal in the MLS Cup final, taking the game to penalties, eventually winning the shootout to secure LAFC their first ever MLS Cup title.
He also shared a message to his Welsh supporters, in a follow up statement.
