Sheffield United On Course To Break Unwanted 16-Year Premier League Record

Sheffield United are on course to break an unwanted Premier League record which is currently held by Derby County.

The 2007/08 campaign saw the Rams register a paltry 11 points all season, and the Blades currently have less points on the board after 14 games this year than Derby did at the same point in 2007.

Unsurprisingly, the pressure has been mounting on Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom after their poor start, with ex-manager Chris Wilder hotly tipped to take over the reigns at Bramall Lane.

The Blades have picked up just one win this season; a 2-1 victory over Wolves in November which required a dubious injury-time spot kick to confirm the three points.

The 5-0 drubbing at Burnley on match week 14 is not United’s biggest defeat this season. Not even close, in fact.

The Blades were torn apart 8-0 by Newcastle in September on home soil. The game saw eight different scorers in the same Premier League match for the first time ever.

Alongside those defeats, they also lost 5-0 to Arsenal in October but did fare slightly better against both Manchester sides, only losing 2-1 on the two occasions they’ve met this season.

The two games they have drawn this season came against Everton in September and against Brighton in November, giving Heckingbottom’s side a total of five points. After 14 games in 2007/08, Derby had one more point on the board.

Derby’s 2007/08 Premier League Campaign

Sheffield United are on course to break an unwanted Premier League record which is currently held by Derby County. The Rams only spent two match weeks outside of the relegation zone and entertained some hefty defeats in the 2007/08 season.

They only won one game in total – 1-0 against Newcastle – but their heavy losses included a 5-0 defeat to Arsenal, 5-0 vs West Ham, 6-0 vs Aston Villa, 6-0 vs Liverpool, 6-1 vs Chelsea and 6-2 in the reverse fixture to the Gunners.

They were also on the receiving end of 4-0 defeats to Tottenham and Reading, as well as getting beaten 4-1 by Manchester United.

Derby did register a fairly credible eight draws which came against Portsmouth, Bolton, Fulham, Newcastle, Manchester City, Birmingham, Sunderland and Fulham again.

The Rams brought in Paul Jewell to replace Billy Davies in November 2007 but it made no difference whatsoever to their fortunes. To this day, Derby still boast an array of unwanted records.

The fewest wins in a Premier League season (1), fewest points (11), most defeats (29), fewest goals scored (20) and most conceded in a 38-game season (89). Sheffield United have a long way to go in the current campaign, but it’s most definitely not beyond the realms of possibility for them to break some of those records.
