Unfortunately, VAR has been a strong talking point of our game once again this season. Everton boss Sean Dyche is the latest to criticise the technology following Everton’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

What did Dyche say?

Dyche wasn’t happy when Chris Kavanagh in VAR overturned on-field referee John Brooks’ decision to book Manchester United striker Anthony Martial for diving. Kavanagh saw something worthy of awarding a penalty to United and advised the decision to be changed to a spot kick. The penalty was converted by Marcus Rashford and the red devils went 2-0 up.

“It’s bizarre, we all know what’s going to happen,” Dyche told Sky Sports.

“The screen thing is a farce. Everyone is talking about speeding up the game but when they come to the screen we all know what the outcome is going to be. Good or bad decisions, call it and get on with it.

“Why do they stand there staring? I haven’t seen a referee overturn one yet. He stands there listening then gives exactly what he has been told.

“I feel for fans. VAR this year has been all over the place. It’s the simplest thing but it seems to be mayhem all the time.”

Asked if he knows what a clear and obvious error is, Dyche replied: “I will be trying to speak to them [referees’ body]. What is it? We were told the directive was to give the referee more power.

“The referee made a very strong decision and the power is taken away. I will ring them and ask: ‘Can you explain to me again what is a clear and obvious error?’

“For me, the idea of VAR is they look for contact, that is not what it should be.”

Fans respond to the points deduction

It’s understandable for tempers to be high despite the VAR descion not going Everton’s way. They have recently been given a 10-point deduction for breaching Financial Fair Play rules. Their supporters were all united in protest against the Premier League with posters of the Premier League with ‘corrupt’ written at the bottom. It has been reported that Everton have raised £30,000 to fight their claim against the Premier League’s decision to deduct 10 points.

Everton are now in 19th place; five points behind 17th Luton Town.
