Arsenal have nearly got their second signing of the summer over the line, with Riccardo Calafiori set to join the Gunners this week following a medical at their training facility in London.

Edu and Mikel Arteta were keen to bring Calafiori to North London after a successful Euros, with the Italian defender turning heads in the tournament before his nation was knocked out by Switzerland in his absence at the last 16 stage.

After a long saga, last year’s Premier League runners up seem to have finally agreed on a deal with Bologna for their star defender, with Arsenal set to pay the Serie A side just over £40m for the sought after fullback.

Calafiori is expected to come straight into the Arsenal team this season, with the North London side struggling for cover at left back last year when new signing Jurrien Timber tore his ACL.

Chelsea and Real Madrid were also amongst those clubs reportedly interested in Calafiori, but the left footed defender had a preference for Arsenal where he has agreed to a five year contract.

Last year at Bologna Calafiori played 30 league games and he became an integral part of their side as they shocked the nation to finish fifth, earning Champions League qualification for the first time since 1964.

The Gunners have been fairly quiet in the transfer window so far, with only £30m spent on David Raya who signed on a permanent deal from Brentford following a successful loan season for the goalkeeper in which he earned the Premier League Golden Glove.

Arsenal are currently taking part in their American pre season tour in California, with Arteta’s side drawing their first game in the States last night against Bournemouth.
