Tyrrell Hatton shot a fabulous round-of-the-day 64 to join Aaron Rai, Corey Conners and C.T. Pan in a share for second place at eight-under, one stroke adrift leader Carl Yuan.
The Englishman nailed five straight birdies around the turn to keep his hopes alive of winning a first tournament in North America.
Rory McIlroy birdied his last two holes to mark a bogey-free 67, moving to six-under and three shots off the lead as he aims to become the first golfer to win the tournament on three straight occasions.
Home favourite Corey Conners is bidding to be the first Canadian-born player to win the Canadian Open since the 1950s and has laid the foundations for a strong charge.

Fitzpatrick struggles and drops to three-under, Justin Rose alive at six-under
Matt Fitzpatrick struggled throughout his second round at Oakdale and ranked amongst the worst in the field in approach play (119th) and putting (113th).
It could have been much worse however, and a one-over 73 keeps his name alive and in the mix. Justin Rose’s 69 helped him move into a tie for 12th, alongside the likes of McIlroy and Si-Woo Kim.
Sam Burns, who was among the pre-tournament favourites in the market, missed the cut at even par in an entirely disappointing performance ahead of the US Open next week.
