Newcastle could lose Bruno Guimaraes this summer as the £100m release clause in his contract could be getting triggered after just two years at the club.

Guimaraes to PSG?

PSG are heavily interested in signing Guimaraes in the summer. Guimaraes joined Newcastle in 2022 for £40m from Lyon, and he’s been a revelation for them in midfield, despite his bad attitude that has seen him pick up nine yellow cards in the Premier League this season.

Newcastle won’t want to lose him but they’d be powerless if PSG decided to trigger the £100m release clause. Guimaraes has 11 goals and nine assists for Newcastle. He will soon make his 100th appearance for the club if he remains fit. He’s just 26 which means he’d be at PSG for the long run.

PSG are five points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table but it’s European success that the fans crave. Kylian Mbappe shows no faith in PSG’s European chances as he’s set for a Real Madrid transfer in the summer.

PSG’S midfield is lacklustre with no midfielders willing to play forward passes and and a lack of pressing which seems to catch them out when they play in the Champions League.

Newcastle’s FFP problem

Newcastle could be better off letting Guimaraes go as it would allow them to spend in the summer. The Magpies have learned from the mistakes of Manchester City and have decided to follow the FFP guidelines that has ruled them out of spending in the January transfer market.

Eddie Howe responded to a question about any potential signings in January, he responded: “Will there be anyone coming in? I don’t know, is the honest answer. I’ve got no idea as we sit here now. Obviously, it would be my intention to try, but let’s wait and see.”

Despite the Saudi Arabia takeover, Newcastle are still spending like any regular team.

Newcastle would struggle for midfield options if they lost Guimaraes as Sandro Tonali will miss the beginning of next season with his ban for betting breaches.

Newcastle have been monitoring Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips as a potential summer purchase. Phillips plays as a defensive midfielder which is perhaps what Newcastle need to the most as it’s been easy for teams to cut through their midfield this season.
