Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso could be set for a move to the Premier League in the near future.

According to reports, the former Liverpool man may be heading back to the Premier League – this time in the dugout.

The 42-year-old Spaniard has been in charge of Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen since 5 October 2022. In that time, he’s won 39 of his 62 games in charge and has taken Leverkusen from second-bottom in the league to top of the table.

They are now four points clear of champions Bayern Munich – who have won the past 11 titles. Such has been Alonso’s progress at Leverkusen, several Premier League sides are now keeping tabs on him.

But they face competition from La Liga giants, Real Madrid. The Spanish super-club reportedly want to snap up the talented young manager who has worked wonders with a historically mediocre German outfit.

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen Record

Prior to Alonso’s arrival, Leverkusen were flirting with relegation from the Bundesliga. They have never won the competition, finishing runners-up on five occasions.

But they now sit top of the table, having breezed through to the Europa League knockouts. They won all six games in Group H, scoring 19 and conceding just three times.

Leverkusen are currently on a 25 game unbeaten run that stretches back to May 2023. They have won 22 of those 25 games and last tasted defeat when down to ten men early on against VfL Bochum.

Since then, it’s been a quite incredibile run for Alonso and his team. But with Premier League clubs now in the hunt for his managerial talents, he may not remain in Germany for much longer.

Who Else Has Xabi Alonso Managed?

Before managing in Germany, the former Spanish international was in charge of Real Sociedad’s B team.

After retiring from playing in 2017, he worked as a youth coach at Real Madrid. His first managerial role came with his boyhood club, who his father Pariko Alonso had also once played for.

With Sociedad’s youngsters, he achieved promotion from the Spanish third tier to La Liga 2 – an impressive feat considering the average age of his squad was just 21.

His success developing a young squad earned him a move to Leverkusen, where he has continued to impress.

It seems only a matter of time before he is snapped up by one of Europe’s elite clubs. The question is wether he will join a Premier League side, or be tempted by the attention of Real Madrid.
