Port Vale vs Middlesbrough Report: Michael Carrick Guides Boro To Semi-Finals
The hosts were enjoying a great run in the EFL Cup, reaching this stage for the first time in the club’s history. The visitors, meanwhile, have a much more storied history in this competition, having lifted the trophy in the 2003/04 season.
Middlesbrough went in front thanks to a huge slice of luck, when Jonny Howson’s long-range effort took a wicked deflection off Jason Lowe before looping in. It was 2-0 shortly after, when Samuel Silvera cut the ball back for Morgan Rogers, who fired home.
Gavin Massey missed a golden opportunity to pull one back for Port Vale, but it was the visitors that were in charge at the half-time interval.
Michael Carrick’s side stamped out any hopes of a Port Vale comeback after 53 minutes when Matt Crooks fired home in the second half.
Middlesbrough will eagerly await to find out their last-four opponent, while the hosts will have to quickly turn their attention back to League One action with a visit to Wycombe at the weekend. For Carrick’s men, they welcome West Brom in the Championship on Saturday.
