Plymouth vs Sutton Preview

Managerless Argyle have been hunting for a new boss since former coach Steven Schumacher left for Stoke City on December 19. The Pilgrims sit 18th in the EFL Championship table, seven points above the relegation zone.

They drew 3-3 with Watford last time out, and were unlucky to lose at high-flying Southampton on 29 December. A wrongly disallowed goal was ruled offside and turned the momentum against Plymouth.

But the FA Cup third round gives them a chance to rebuild some confidence with a whin, and they will be heavy favourites when Sutton travel down to Devon.

Sutton are having a very worrying League Two campaign so far. Matt Gray’s team are in the bottom two, five points from safety.

With just four wins from 25 games, the cup will come as a welcome respite from league duties. Although underdogs, the chance to play a game without the pressure of maintaining Football League status may allow the players to relax on Saturday.

Argyle will be without a number of players when they face Sutton at the weekend. Saxon Earley is out with an ankle injury but should return within the next week or so.

Michael Cooper’s knee injury is expected to keep him out for a while yet, though. He is set to return some time in early March, so long as his recovery goes well.

There are doubts over Macauley Gillesphey too, with the defender suffering muscle cramps during his side’s last fixture.
