According to The Times, Nottingham Forest are the latest side to be at risk of breaching profit and sustainability rules. Everton are also facing another penalty for breaching more Financial Fair Play rules.
Why are Nottingham Forest facing FFP charges?
During the 2022/23 season, Nottingham Forest signed 30 players. Forest chairman Tom Cartledge understood that the club needed to spend if they were to avoid relegation after getting promoted to the Premier League but he clearly didn’t understand the consequences of bringing in 3o players.
Forest were also big spenders in the Championship during their promotion push to the Premier League. They spent around £60m in their final two seasons in the Championship and because Forest have only been in the Premier League for two of the past three years, they are only permitted under Premier League rules to lose a maximum of £61m across that period.
Forest made losses of £45.6m in 2021/22 after being promoted and £15.5m the year before.
The figure they’ve spent whilst being in the Premier League is around £260m. Overall, Forest have spent £320m in the last four seasons which could prove costly.
Why are Everton likely to be charged again?
Everton are also at risk of a second charge this season for breaking the same rules as Forest
The Toffees have already been deducted 10 points for losses up to £124.5m but they could face further punishment. Everton have appealed the punishment but they’re not likely to find out how successful the appeal is until the end of the season where it may be too late for the club as they’re fighting relegation for the third season in a row.
Everton would be in 12th place on 26 points which shows how well Sean Dyche’s men have done but another deduction could mean the end of the fight.
When will Everton and Nottingham Forest find out the decision?
The Premier League have a fast-track system that deals with regular forms of FFP. This is why Everton’s case was dealt with so quickly. More complicated cases such as Chelsea’s and Manchester City’s require more time.
Nottingham Forest and Everton should find out the results on January 14th as all 20 Premier League clubs had to to submit their accounts for 2022/23 by December 31.
