Newcastle United have endured a torrid run of results in recent weeks and whispers are emerging that manager Eddie Howe may be on borrowed time.
The Magpies 4-2 defeat to Liverpool on New Year’s Day put the spotlight firmly back on Howe, who has picked up just two wins in his last nine and slipped out of the EFL Cup and UEFA Champions League.
The Toon army face bitter rivals Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the FA Cup 3rd round on the 6th of January and a defeat to the Mackems will be a huge blow.
Here at SportsLens, we take a look at five potential candidates who could replace Howe as Newcastle manager including a three-time Premier League winner.
Eddie Howe Replacement
Eddie Howe’s replacement as Newcastle United boss has seen some of the finest names in football being linked with the post. Some are already proven in the Premier League with others enjoying success across Europe.
If, and it’s a very big if, the Magpies could attract a world class coach the Toon Army will be more than confident of an upturn in fortunes to get their season back on track. Let’s take a closer look at the most likely contenders.
Graham Potter To Newcastle
Graham Potter has been without a club for the best part of a year and he still holds a fairly solid reputation despite his troublesome spell with his most recent team, Chelsea.
Potter to Newcastle is a viable option and an almost like-for-like replacement for Eddie Howe after his brilliant work at Brighton & Hove Albion.
Massimiliano Allegri Newcastle Manager
Massimiliano Allegri swapping the black and white of Juventus for the black and white of Newcastle isn’t beyond the realms of possibility. The six-time Serie A winner can certainly get the best out of his players.
Allegri would be a huge coup for the Magpies and if he was promised a decent level of funds, without any FFP issues, it would be a great move for both parties.
Thomas Frank Newcastle
After leading Brentford to the Premier League and guiding the Bees to back-to-back mid-table finishes, Thomas Frank has recently been feeling the pressure in west London.
The Dane is widely respected in England’s elite and a move to St James’ Park would be considered a step-up for the 50-year old and would be warmly received by the fans.
Newcastle In For Brendan Rodgers?
Currently in his second stint at Celtic, Brendan Rodgers is a likely candidate to replace Eddie Howe at Newcastle United.
The Northern Irishman won the FA Cup at Leicester and led them to consecutive top six finishes. Rodgers would be a very solid appointment.
Jose Mourinho Going To Newcastle?
Just imagine the Special One on Tyneside. Jose Mourinho is certainly in the running for the Newcastle United job and on paper, he would be a real coup.
The Portuguese superstar is a serial winner and the fans would surely love him at the helm. His spell at Tottenham wasn’t great so he certainly has unfinished business in the Premier League.
Newcastle Manager Candidates
Naturally, picking just five Newcastle manager candidates doesn’t reflect every name that has been rumoured to replace Eddie Howe. Here’s a look at some other contenders including a few long shots:
- Zinedine Zidane
- Antonio Conte
- Steve Cooper
- Xabi Alonso
- Roberto De Zerbi
- Marco Silva
