Check out the most expensive football shirts ever after one excited buyer recently bid £5.2million for six of Lionel Messi’s match-worn shirts from last year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Most Expensive Football Shirts Ever Sold

Read on to see the five most expensive football shirts ever known to have been sold.

1. Diego Maradona Hand Of God Shirt – £7,142,500

The shirt Diego Maradona wore for the famous “Hand of God” moment is the most expensive football shirt ever sold.

Maradona challenged England goalkeeper Peter Shilton to reach the ball, when it struck the Argentinian’s hand before bouncing into the back of the net and it remains one of football’s most iconic moments.

The goal was allowed to stand as the referee did not have a clear view of what happened, and Maradona went on to score again shortly after, allowing Argentina to lift the 1986 World Cup.

2. Lionel Messi 2022 World Cup Match-Worn Shirts – £5,200,000 (projected to be higher)

Next comes another Argentinian from another World Cup. Lionel Messi helped guide Argentina to a first World Cup title since Maradona’s “Hand of God” and unsurprisingly his match-worn shirts are very popular among bidders.

Well, one excited fan last week bid £5,200,00 for six of his shirts, including the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.

Messi is considered by many to be the greatest footballer to ever live so there’s no shock that people are willing to pay so much for his match-worn shirts.

3. Pele’s 1970 World Cup Brazil Shirt – £157,750

Next on the list is a shirt worn by Pele at the 1970 World Cup. The Brazilian legend wore this particular shirt in the final when his side beat Italy.

Pele also scored that game, adding plenty of value to the famous shirt. Former Italy international Roberto Rosarto sold the shirt after swapping his with Pele after the game, and it remains unknown who now owns it.

For a long time before the fairly recent sale of Maradona’s “Hand of God” shirt, it was the most expensive ever sold.

4. Sir Geoff Hurst’s England World Cup Winning Shirt From 1966 – £91,750

Sir Geoff Hurst is one of England’s biggest football icons and he helped the Three Lions to their first and only World Cup win in 1966.

Spurs legend Hurst scored an incredible hat-trick in the 4-2 win over West Germany and will forever go down as one of the footballing greats.

He was so popular that his shirt was one of the most expensive football shirts in the world for quite some time when it was sold for £91,750 in September 2000.

5. 1990 Match-Worn East Germany Shirt – £1,250

Finally, we get to the match-worn East Germany shirt from 1990. Whilst it may not be as expensive as those already discussed, it was still sold for quite a lot of money.

This shirt was worn during a friendly match in the 90s when East Germany beat Scotland 2-1 in Perth.
