Manchester United vs Aston Villa Key Stats
Boxing Day’s evening clash in the Premier League sees Aston Villa take on Manchester United at Old Trafford, with both sides coming into the tie displaying very different levels of form.
The Villans are unbeaten in 10 straight matches across all competitions, sitting third in the league table, and have overcome the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham in recent weeks.
Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils on the other hand, find themselves occupying eighth place in the table – 11 points adrift of Villa, and boast just one win from their last seven matches.
The reigning Carabao Cup champions were also knocked out of the Champions League during this run, after finishing bottom of a group that included Galatasaray and Copenhagen, and followed that up with a goalless draw against Liverpool and a 2-0 defeat to West Ham last time out.
Plenty Of Goals In Recent Meetings
Excluding their last matchup at Old Trafford in April, there have been plenty of goals in Manchester United and Aston Villa’s recent meetings dating back to January 2022.
Three of their last four meetings have ended with over 3.5 goals scored, with United winning 4-2 in the Carabao Cup back in November 2022, Villa winning 3-1 in the league four days prior to that and a 2-2 stalemate halfway through January of the same year.
Coming into this one though, there has been a lack of goals in the pair’s matches across all competitions. United’s last three matches have ended with less than 2.5 goals scored, while four of Villa’s last five games have achieved the same feat.
Manchester United In Dreadful Form
As previously alluded to, Manchester United are in terrible form. Ten Hag’s side have won just once in their last seven matches across all competitions (2-1 win over Chelsea in the league), and were comfortably beaten 2-0 by West Ham last time out.
The Red Devils were actually on top in the first half against the Hammers, but after a total collapse in the second period – Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus punished the 20-time English champions.
One can only imagine that this run of poor form will be continued against the Villans on Boxing Day, especially as they are in excellent form, but also because United have a terribly extensive absentee list.
Casemiro, Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount, Victor Lindelof and Jadon Sancho are just a few of the names unavailable for Villa’s visit on Tuesday, with the likes of Anthony Martial, Amad Diallo and Raphael Varane also reported as doubts.
