Amid interest from Manchester City for Lucas Paqueta, West Ham could look for smart options within the Premier League to replace their star midfielder.
Manchester City Transfer Exclusive: Paqueta Still A Target
Brazilian midfielder Paqueta remains on Manchester City‘s radar for the upcoming summer transfer window, following on from their failed attempt to secure his signature prior to the 2023/24 season.
Discussions took place around an £80million switch last year, however a move away from London failed to materialise and reports suggested that the 26-year-old was central to a betting investigation.
Last week Paqueta was named in Brazil’s squad for their upcoming friendlies against England and Spain, and national team director Rodrigo Caetano said: “He continues to play normally, he was not punished, so it is a situation that is not for us to judge. A very high-level athlete, he does not have any investigation or accusations underway, at least for now.”
Sources have told SportsLens that they are confident the probe will soon be behind him, and that he could soon become available for a transfer.
City are still keen to sign him and – along with Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich – he is a key target being considered for next season.
City’s James McAtee Eyed As Potential Paqueta Replacement
The Hammers realise they have signed a gem in Paqueta, and while he would be a huge miss, they are set to make a profit on him as he joined from Lyon in 2022 for around £51million.
Insiders at West Ham do not expect the Irons to splash out if they have to replace Paqueta however.
There are signifiant changes needed at the club this summer. David Moyes’ position as manager remains unclear and several first teamers will be moved on, including Aaron Cresswell, Danny Ings and Michail Antonio.
West Ham are set to look for good value players who also hold a certain level of Premier League experience. One player suggested to SportsLens as a potential target is James McAtee.
The midfielder has spent this season on loan at relegation-threatened Sheffield United, and that deal will come to an end after the campaign is drawn to a close.
McAtee’s profile aligns with what the club are looking for ahead of next term and the fact he is owned by Manchester City – who are chasing Paqueta – adds an element of intrigue to a potential deal.
