Manchester City have set a new Champions League record for English teams after they recorded their ninth straight victory in the competition on Tuesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s ruthless City overcame FC Copenhagen 3-1 in the Danish capital to take a healthy aggregate lead back to Manchester for the round-of-sixteen second leg.

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring after ten minutes with a low strike across the goal. Magnus Mattson equalised in the 34th minute after Ederson’s misplaced clearance gifted the hosts an opportunity.

On the stroke of half-time, Bernardo Silva restored the lead, before Phil Foden sealed it in stoppage time.

The win makes it nine straight victories in the Champions League, the most ever for an English side.

Manchester City Champions League Record

City’s record-breaking run includes all seven of their games in the Champions League this campaign, as well as last year’s semi-final second leg and the final in Istanbul.

In that time, they’ve scored 26 and conceded only eight times. Interestingly, they have also exactly three goals in all seven Champions League games this season.

Manchester City’s nine consecutive Champions League wins:

  • 17/05/23 – Manchester City 4-0 Real Madrid (Semi-final)
  • 10/0623 – Manchester City 1-0 Inter Milan (Final)
  • 19/09/23 – Manchester City 3-1 Red Star Belgrade (Group G)
  • 04/10/23 – RB Leipzig 1-3 Manchester City (Group G)
  • 25/10/23 – BSC Young Boys 1-3 Manchester City (Group G)
  • 07/11/23 – Manchester City 3-0 BSC Young Boys (Group G)
  • 28/11/23 – Manchester City 3-2 RB Leipzig (Group G)
  • 13/12/23 – Red Star Belgrade 2-3 Manchester City (Group G)
  • 13/02/24 – FC Copenhagen 1-3 Manchester City (R16)

It’s been a stellar run for the European champions, who have also lifted the Premier League, FA Cup and Club World Cup in the past year.

Having completed a historic treble last season, Guardiola’s men are still on track to repeat the feat this year.

They travel to Luton Town in the FA Cup Fifth Round, and will return to the top of the Premier League if they win their game in hand over leaders Liverpool.

When Did Manchester City Last Lose In The Champions League?

It’s been some time since City last tasted defeat in European football. On their run to the Champions League title last season, they did not lose a single game, winning eight and drawing the other five games.

They have not lost in the competition since they were knocked out in extra time by Real Madrid at the semi-final stage in 2022. Their last group stage defeat was earlier in the same season, as they fell 2-1 away to RB Leipzig.

And you have to go much further back to find City’s last consecutive Champions League defeats. They have not lost two games on the bounce in Europe since they were beaten 3-0 and then 2-1 by Liverpool in the 2017/18 quarter-finals.
