Newly-crowned Carabao Cup champions Liverpool host Championship side Southampton in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday, with the pair’s squad values separated by close to £600million.
Fresh off the back of lifting the Carabao Cup at Wembley on Sunday, Liverpool remain in cup play as they host Southampton at Anfield in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday evening.
The Reds currently sit top of the table in the Premier League, while the Saints sit fourth in the Championship – eyeing an instant return to the top flight after being relegated last season.
It’ll be the first time since 1990 for the pair to meet in the FA Cup, an encounter that ended 3-0 in favour of Liverpool, and we at SportsLens are doing a deep dive on the squad values of both sides ahead of the action.
Liverpool vs Southampton Squad Values Compared: Positional Breakdown
Goalkeepers
The Reds’ first choice goalkeeper Alisson (£27.375m) will have to sit out a fifth consecutive game when Southampton visit Anfield, as he remains out of action due to a hamstring injury. Caoimhin Kelleher (£12.83m) is likely to retain his position, while third choice goalkeeper Adrian (£500k) should be named on the bench.
Whilst Liverpool’s three goalkeepers equate to a market value of more than £40m when combined, the Saints’ trio of stoppers combine to a total value of around £13.75m. Kelleher’s compatriot, Gavin Bazunu, makes up the bulk of that total as he is also valued at £12.83m.
Defenders
It’ll come as little surprise to many to learn that Trent Alexander-Arnold is Liverpool’s most valuable defender, priced at a stunning £60m. Ibrahima Konate (£32.5m), Andrew Robertson (£30m) and Virgil van Dijk (£27.4m) follow as the second, third and fourth most valuable defensive players within Jurgen Klopp‘s squad.
In comparison to the majority of second tier sides, Southampton have a highly valued set of defenders, but not when compared to top-end Premier League squads. Manchester City loanee Taylor Harwood-Bellis is the most valuable at around £18.8m, followed by Kyle Walker-Peters (£17.1m) and Jan Bednarek (£9.4m).
Midfielders
The gap in value between first tier squads and second tier squads is as evident as ever when comparing both sets of midfielders, with the Reds’ set priced at just over £230m, while Wednesday evening’s visiting midfield is valued at around £29.5m – more than a £200m difference.
Dominik Szoboszlai leads the way for Liverpool at £64.1m, with fellow summer signing Alexis Mac Allister (£55.6m) in second, followed by Ryan Gravenberch (£30m), Curtis Jones (£25.7m) and Harvey Elliott (£25.7m).
Russell Martin’s most valuable midfielder is 20-year-old Northern Ireland international Shea Charles (£9.4m), with West Ham United loanee Flynn Downes (£6.85m) closely following in second.
Forwards
Once again, there is a huge difference in valuation between the two sets of forwards with more than £200m separating the pair once more.
Liverpool’s Luis Diaz (£64.1m), Mohamed Salah (£55.6m), Darwin Nunez (£55.6m), Diogo Jota (£42.75m), Cody Gakpo (£42.75m) and Ben Doak (£8.55m) combine to reach just shy of a whopping £270m.
The Saints’ frontline on the other hand, combines to around £67.5m with nine players. Both Kamaldeen Sulemana and Adam Armstrong are the most valuable of the nine at £13.7m, with Scotland striker Che Adams not too far behind at a value of £12.83m.
