Liverpool vs Arsenal (1-1) Report: Salah Inspires Reds To Vital Point
The visitors headed into this one at the top of the Premier League table, level on points with Aston Villa following their stalemate with Sheffield United on Friday night, however Liverpool knew that they could snatch top spot heading into Christmas by winning in front of a roaring home crowd.
Despite an electric atmosphere, Arsenal were simply not intimidated. This was made clear just three minutes into the match when Gabriel Magalhaes powerfully headed home the opener past Alisson from Martin Odegaard’s free-kick.
The Kop was left stunned, but with 87 minutes of normal time still to go – the hosts didn’t back down. Trent Alexander-Arnold sent a stunning through ball over the Gunners’ defence towards Mohamed Salah down the right-hand side, and the Egyptian cut in and seemed to float past Oleksandr Zinchenko with ease, before rifling an effort into the top right corner to restore the parity.
It was game on, and for the remainder of the half – both sides had sighters on goal, but it was Arsenal who had the pick of the bunch. Bukayo Saka broke in behind Joe Gomez and played the ball to Gabriel Martinelli amid a challenge from Alisson, however the winger failed to hit the target with the goalkeeper stood in no man’s land.
The second half was a similar story, with half chances for both sides here and there, but if one side was going to win it – it looked as if it was going to be Liverpool. A five-on-two attack saw Salah play Alexander-Arnold in one-on-one from around 12 yards out, but the defender snatched at the chance and rattled the crossbar.
Neither side could find a late winner, and after an epic battle on Merseyside – the spoils were shared, seeing Arsenal top the table heading into Christmas.
That’s the end of that one 😮💨
