Liverpool are on course to break several records this season and goal contributions from substitutes could be next.
Liverpool 2023/24: Substitute Goal Contributions
Jurgen Klopp will leave his role as Liverpool manager at the end of the season and is on course to win a league title – while breaking a host of records.
One record that could be broken by Liverpool this season is the amount of goal contributions from substitutes, something Klopp has played a huge part in.
The German was one of the leading members to increase the substitutions to five instead of three and he has reaped the rewards this year.
Liverpool beat Nottingham Forest in their most recent Premier League match and Darwin Nunez came off the bench to score in the 99th minute and contribute with Liverpool’s 43rd goal involvement.
This kept the Reds at the top of the table and also moved Liverpool to two goals behind the Premier League record for goal contributions from a substitute in a campaign.
Manchester City hold the current record with 24 goal contributions from subs in 2011-12 and Arsenal are one ahead of Liverpool from their 2009/10 campaign with 23.
Substitutions have become a bigger part of the game and 13.8% of goals in the Premier League this season have come from those of the bench – an increase from 12.7% last year.
Liverpool have utilised a staggering 34 players this season and 31 have come off the bench a minimum of once – with Harvey Elliott leading on 18 substitute appearances.
Klopp has been dealt a plethora of injuries this season and has used several academy prospects, including Jayden Danns who scored two goals from the bench in a 3-0 win over Southampton in the FA Cup fifth round.
For the Reds this season, 15 players have come off the bench and contributed to a goal, as Darwin Nunez ranks first with eight goal contributions (4G+4A).
