This week we head to TPC Deere Run in Illinois for the 2023 John Deere Classic where SportsLens’ resident golf expert Joe Lyons is offering up some of our very own betting tips and predictions.

The John Deere Classic is an annual event on the PGA Tour, played in July and usually comes the week before the final major of the season – The Open Championship – which is just over two weeks away this time around.

Since the introduction of the Open Qualifying Series, the John Deere Classic presents one final chance for a player not already exempt to earn entry into The Open with a top-five finish and the tournament has a sponsored charter flight that leaves on Sunday night and arrives in the United Kingdom the next morning.

John Deere Classic 2023 Preview

This year’s defending champion is world number 62 J.T. Poston, who beat Christian Bezuidenhout and Emiliano Grillo by three shots with a score of -21 in 2022. The 30-year-old is available at a price of 45/1 with the best golf betting sites.

TPC Deere Run is open to the public and a well-loved course throughout the golf community, also famous for allowing some tremendously low scores over the years. Half of the 22 winners here have matched or gone better than 20-under-par on the par-71 track.

2018 champion Michael Kim blew us away with a 27-under 257 to win his first PGA Tour title, the seventh-lowest score in tour history. Seven John Deere Classics have been won by a single shot and seven have been decided in a playoff.

We can expect another low scoring tournament this year with emphasis on ball striking and short game, likely to turn into a birdie-fest fairly early on. This week’s field is on the weaker side with just 18 players inside the Official Golf World Ranking’s top 75 teeing it up.

Cameron Young is the sole top-20 player taking part and those at the head of the market include Denny McCarthy, Russell Henley, Ludvig Aberg, Adam Hadwin and Adam Schenk.

Fairways and greens are above average in size at TPC Deere Run so iron play is likely to determine what sets the field apart on a short(er) course of just over 7,200 yards.

John Deere Classic Tip 1: Adam Hadwin To Win And Each-Way (8 Places) @ 28/1 with BetUK

Adam Hadwin has quietly enjoyed a solid season on the PGA Tour, but to date his main highlight is being floored by a security guard on the 18th green as he celebrated his friend Nick Taylor’s triumph at the Canadian Open – hopefully that changes this week.

The 35-year-old’s game is in good shape at the minute following a narrow playoff defeat last weekend at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, going toe-to-toe with Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa and didn’t look out of place whatsoever.

He finished second at TPC Louisiana at the Zurich Classic in April and has accumulated eight top-20 finishes this year. Hadwin has also showed the ability to thrive on a low scoring course, posting three finishes of 20-under-par or better.

He missed the cut here last year and skipped the event for a few seasons prior, with a tied-eighth finish in 2016 highlighting his potential in Illinois. Hadwin ranks 30th on the tour in approach play this season and 27th in total strokes gained and putting respectively.

The Canadian is slowly but surely putting the pieces together and is worth a few quid at 28/1 (8 places) with the best golf betting sites as he seeks a second PGA Tour victory.

John Deere Classic Tip 2: Nick Taylor To Win And Each-Way (8 Places) @ 35/1 with BetUK

Hadwin’s good friend and national compatriot Nick Taylor also looks to be an intriguing name in the field for the John Deere Classic this week at a price of 35/1 with the best golf betting sites.

Taylor has produced some patchy form in the last few months with some high highs and low lows, highlighted by his victory at the Canadian Open last month where he defeated Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff.

He has missed the cut in three of his last four starts but when his game is clicking as seen in Canada and at the Zurich Classic in April where he finished tied-second, Taylor can hold his own against some of the best talent on tour.

The 35-year-old has nine top-20 finishes this season but doesn’t have the greatest record around TPC Deere Run, with four missed cuts since 2015 and three consecutive finishes at 11-under-par.

This is reflected in his price but the Canadian has ranked well statistically on the tour this season; 20th in total strokes gained and 28th in approach and putting respectively, with an attractive mark of 35/1 (8 places) next to his name.

John Deere Classic Tip 3: Cameron Champ To Win And Each-Way (12 Places) @ 90/1 with BetUK

The back end of the market is a wise place to look this week with an open field and Cameron Champ caught my eye at 90/1 (12 places) despite a string of missed cuts this season.

The 28-year-old has failed to hit the ground running in a majorly disappointing season but two finishes inside the top ten at the Zozo Championship and Mexico Open suggest when he’s feeling comfortable and confident he can put his name in the mix.

He finished tied-11th at TPC Deere Run in 2021 with a score of 14-under and is one of the best players on the tour off the tee, ranking first in club head speed and sixth in driving distance. On a shorter course than usual compared to PGA Tour standards, this could really open up his game this week.

Champ has three career wins on the tour and is certainly capable of a drastic turnaround to snatch a surprise victory. Two years ago after a run of four missed cuts and a WD, he earned his tied-11th finish at the John Deere Classic and went on to win the 3M Open the tournament after.

John Deere Classic Tip 4: Carl Yuan To Win And Each-Way (12 Places) @ 150/1 with BetUK

26-year-old Carl Yuan has been a prominent name on the leaderboard at times throughout the last month, posting a tied-18th finish at the Canadian Open and tied-14th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last weekend in between a missed cut at the Travelers Championship.

His first full season on the PGA Tour has been a learning curve but he has shown bags of ability throughout, even ranking second on the tour in approaches from inside 150-175 yards.

Also ranking sixth in consecutive birdies/eagles streak, a low scoring frenzy could put his name right amongst it and Yuan marks SportsLens‘ fourth and final selection at 150/1 (12 places) to win the John Deere Classic.
