Jamie Carragher says Aston Villa’s Unai Emery is ‘possibly the third best manager’ in the Premier League currently, having led the Villans to fifth after the first 12 games of the 2023/24 campaign.
The Spaniard has been a huge hit at Villa Park since he replaced Steven Gerrard in November 2022 and Carragher believes there are only two gaffers who are better than the 52-year-old.
Jamie Carragher’s Quotes
“I think you can make an argument that Unai Emery is possibly the third best manager in this Premier League. You’ve probably got Klopp and Guardiola, who are Champions League winners, but when you actually look at the body work of Emery, not just at Aston Villa, continually winning Europa Leagues, even Mikel Arteta and Mauricio Pochettino haven’t got that CV in terms of winning trophies,” the pundit said.
“Aston Villa are a better coached team than Manchester United, there’s absolutely no doubt about that,” he went on to add. Jamie Carragher’s words will certainly bode well with Villa fans and players alike and it’s hard to disagree on current form about his claims of Emery being the third best manager in the Premier League.

Aston Villa’s Home Form
Aston Villa’s home form is a huge reason as to why the club have gone from relegation strugglers to Champions League hopefuls. Emery got his reign off to a flying start in front of the Villa Park faithful as they cruised past Manchester United 3-1 in November 2022, but they didn’t win on home soil again for two months in the league – however, it would act as a springboard for greater things to come.
Emery has overseen 13 consecutive home Premier League victories which has made Villa Park one of the most feared grounds in the country currently, something of which goes a long way into strengthening Carragher’s claims about Emery. Arsenal and Manchester City are the next two visitors to Villa Park so Emery and his players will have to be at their absolute best to ensure their terrific home form continues.
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa Record
Jamie Carragher says Aston Villa’s Unai Emery is ‘possibly the third best manager’ in the Premier League and it’s easy to see why he has claimed this. In his 37 matches in charge, Emery has overseen 23 wins and five draws, accumulating in a total of 74 points. A tally that high would have been enough for a top four finish last season. In the Europa Conference League, Emery has won three of his four group games which included consecutive wins over last year’s semi-finalists AZ Alkmaar.
In all competitions, Emery has won 28 games, drawn 5 and lost 13, which gives him a win rate of 60.87%. Only in his spell as PSG boss can Emery boast a better win rate percentage. Villa haven’t won a major trophy since 1996 and with Emery at the helm, it wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone if the Spaniard was to bring back some silverware to Villa Park come the end of the season.
