Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho has cost the club £6.9 million in wages since his last appearance for the club.
After a lengthy spell out in the cold at Old Trafford, Sancho today rejoined former club Borussia Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the season.
The fallout between the 23-year-old and manager Eric Ten Hag has been well documented, but may have finally come to a close with the winger’s departure.
Sancho last featured for United against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on 26 August, where he managed 30 minutes off the bench in United’s 3-2 victory at Old Trafford.
After Ten Hag told the media that poor training performances caused Sancho’s omission from the squad to face Arsenal on September 3, Sancho took to social media to dispute the claim. The direct challenge to his manager’s authority was not taken lightly.
Since then, Sancho has been left out of every United match day squad, with reports claiming he was exiled from all first-team facilities at the club. He had been training with the academy players since accusing his manager of lying, with no sign of reconciliation.
With Sancho earning a reported £350,000 a week, we wondered just how expensive this problem has been for United.
Jadon Sancho’s Wages Breakdown
Having joined United in July 2021, Jadon Sancho has now been at the club for 128 weeks. In that time, he has picked up a whopping £44.8 million in wages.
Since his last game against Forest, he’s earned around £6.9 million – without kicking a ball. That’s almost £2 million more than Luton’s record signing Ryan Giles cost the Hatters when he joined from Wolves this summer.
Sancho has played 82 times for United in two years at the club. But with just 12 goals and six assists in that time, he’s been far from cost-effective. Based on his £350,000-a-week wage, the winger has cost United £3,733,333 per goal and £7,466,667 per assist in salary alone.
And if you add the £73 million transfer fee paid by United to sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, these figures rise to £9,816,666 and £19,633,333 respectively.
An End To The Sancho Saga?
United fans will no doubt be hoping this is the end to an expensive and embarrassing ordeal for the club. But it may not be quite over yet.
Sancho’s loan deal does not contain an option to buy, meaning he could well return to Old Trafford in the summer.
Dortmund will at least pay the majority of the 23-year-old’s wages, with a £3 million loan fee. There are also £3.4 million in potential add-ons which are subject to appearances and Dortmund’s season performance.
Sancho has already travelled to Germany, and is expected to link up with his teammates immediately.
Speaking to the media on his return, he said: “When I came into the dressing room today, it felt like ‘coming home’.
“I can’t wait to see my team-mates again, go out on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, prepare goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League.”
Sancho spent four seasons in the Bundesliga with Dortmund, scoring 50 goals. But after his move to Old Trafford saw a dip in form, his relationship with Ten Hag deteriorated.
Sancho previously spent four seasons with the Bundesliga club from 2017, scoring 50 goals in 137 appearances.
