Italy and Juventus legend defender Giorgio Chiellini is set to retire at the age of 39. Chiellini was most known for his 17 years spent at Juventus and for his EURO win with Italy in 2020.
Chiellini’s career
Chiellini started his career at Livorno. He made eight appearances before going to Roma in 2002. He was immediately loaned back to Livorno where he made an additional 47 appearances.
Roma sold Chiellini to Juventus after having not made a single appearance for the club. He was loaned out to Fiorentina in his first season but after a successful loan spell, Chiellini enjoyed a 17-year spell at Juventus where he made 425 appearances and scored 27 goals. During that time he won the Serie A nine times, one Italienischer Zweitligameister, five Italian Cups and five Italian Super Cups.
In 2021, Chiellini led Italy to a EURO trophy; beating England on penalties at Wembley. He also won the U19s EURO in 2003.
In 2022, Chiellini exited for America to play for Los Angeles FC. There he has won the MLS Cup and the Supporters Shield. Today, Chiellini has officially announced his retirement at 39 years of age.
Chiellini’s retirement
On X, Chiellini made a statement on his retirement: “You have been my everything. With you I have travelled a unique and unforgettable path.
“But now it is time to start new chapters, face new challenges and write further important and exciting pages of life.”
His cherished club Juventus paid tribute to Chiellini, saying: “For Juventus fans, for 17 seasons, the number three stood for one thing, and one thing only: Giorgio Chiellini.
“You were always by our side, like a superhero ready to intervene if necessary.”
