The Premier League has announced a massive new TV rights deal from 2025.
The deal with Sky and TNT Sports is worth £6.7bn and will run for four years from 2025-26. While the deal will see broadcast revenues remain relatively stable, the number of live games on show is set to increase significantly.
Sky continues to be the dominant name in UK football coverage. They already show the Italian Serie A and German Bundesliga, and recently agreed a five-year deal to screen 1,000 EFL games from the Championship, League One and League Two.
Flagship broadcaster Sky Sports has retained the lion’s share of Premier League games, winning four of five packages. They will screen a minimum of 215 live matches – including all games on the final day of the season. TNT Sports will show 52 games, while BBC’s Match of the Day will continue after renewing its own highlights deal.
In a Premier League first, all games outside of the Saturday 3pm window will be shown live in the UK. Fans will be able to choose between multiple live midweek fixtures as well as all Sunday games. The Premier League have called the deal “the largest sports media rights deal ever concluded in the UK”.
Chief Executive of the Premier League, Richard Masters, said: “As longstanding and valued partners, Sky Sports and TNT Sports are renowned for consistently delivering world‑class coverage and programming. We have enjoyed record audiences and attendances in recent seasons, and we know that their continued innovation will drive more people to watch and follow the Premier League.”
But with Sky’s prices already rising this year, fans may have to pay more despite this landmark Premier League TV deal.
How Much Does A Sky Sports Package Cost?
As it stands, existing Sky customers can add Sky Sports to their package for an extra £18 per month. TNT Sports can be added to existing BT Broadband accounts for £25 a month with a £39.99 startup fee.
But for those without existing Sky accounts, NOW TV offer monthly passes to watch Sky Sports for £34.99 a month. A monthly pass for TNT Sports will cost viewers £29.99.
This means fans pay a minimum of £64.98 to view every Premier League game available in a month. For comparison, the cheapest match tickets in the top flight this season are £33.15 on average – around half the price.
Prices for Sky customers have risen across the board already this year, with an 8.1% average hike in April. With inflation sky high, it is likely that further increases will happen before the new deal starts in 2025.
There is a silver lining for Premier League fans, though. Amazon will stop broadcasting matches from the top flight in 2025, having lost out to Sky and TNT. That means fans will now only have to purchase two streaming packages to watch all available games.
Sky Group chief executive Dana Strong said: “This is a fantastic result for Sky customers, who will see a significant increase in the number of matches from the most iconic league in the world.
“We are proud of our long history with the Premier League and look forward to delivering more engagement, entertainment, and innovation to the end of the decade. Sky is the undisputed home for sport fans in the UK.”
