After news surfaced on Tuesday that he will require surgery on a pubic bone injury, we pose the question – how long will Richarlison be out for?
Latest Richarlison Injury Will Require Surgery
“That last few months haven’t been easy for me…I’ve had health problems and it’s time to fix this one.”
Those are the words of Tottenham striker Richarlison, whose struggles to get to full fitness since arriving in North London have so far stunted his development.
The Brazil international had featured in each of Tottenham’s Premier League fixtures up until their first defeat of the season against Chelsea on Monday, but has completed the full 90 minutes on just two occasions.
This latest injury setback marks the third spell on the sidelines for Richarlison since making the switch from Everton last season.
In total, he has already missed 11 games and 59 days through injury, and is likely to be unavailable for another lengthy period after revealing he intends to undergo surgery.
What is a Pubic Bone Injury?
The pubic bone, or the pubis, is one of the three main bones that make up the pelvis.
It is unclear what the official diagnosis of Richarlison’s injury actually is, but with surgery apparently required in order to remedy the situation, it has likely been taking its toll in recent months.
Speaking to the press following the defeat to Chelsea, he said: “I’ve been suffering, fighting for my national team and my club for eight months and haven’t been taking care of myself.
“I think it’s time to rest, to stop for a second. I’ll think about it in the next few days and soon I will do what is best for me.”
How Long Will Richarlison Be Out For?
Pubic bone stress fractures typically take six-to-eight weeks to heal, plus recovery time. It is safe to assume that he will be ruled out for at least a month, and perhaps more realistically maybe even two months.
This latest unfortunate episode in his stuttering career comes after seeing his regular minutes dwindle slightly, leading to his exclusion from the latest Brazil international squad. This is despite managing to hold down a starting spot in recent years, even with competition from the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino.
Tottenham Injury Crisis Continues to Mount
Richarlison’s announcement will only add to the frustration that manager Ange Postecoglou is likely feeling following Monday night’s events.
An injury list already made up of Manor Solomon, Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon just got that little bit longer, with Micky van de Ven’s worrying hamstring injury seeing him join the recovery group alongside Richarlison.
Fellow centre-back Cristian Romero will also likely miss the next three matches after being shown a straight red card against Chelsea, while Destiny Udogie will serve a one-match ban against Wolves.
James Maddison also limped off with what appeared to be an ankle problem, although Postecoglou has since downplayed the severity of the injury.
