Another Harry Kane hat-trick – his second since joining Bayern Munich in the summer – has once again failed to pass the test of a ‘true’ hat-trick in German football.
Harry Kane Hat-Trick Not ‘True’ in Eyes of German Football
Harry Kane’s trifecta of strikes for Bayern Munich this afternoon sent his side temporarily top of the Bundesliga, as the champions extended their unbeaten run to nine games with a breathless 8-0 victory over Darmstadt.
England’s all-time top scorer bagged three goals in the same game on eight occasions in the Premier League throughout his career, but he is still waiting for his first ‘true’ hat-trick in Germany, according to tradition.
German football folklore dictates that for a hat-trick to be true and proper, a player must score all three of their goals in the same half and without interruption. If another player scores in between, then their chances of scoring a ‘hat-trick’ are wiped.
Of course, the rest of the football world will look upon the scoresheet and see Kane has scored what they believe to be a perfectly good hat-trick.
Kane himself will likely feel hard done by considering he opened the floodgates for Bayern’s eight-goal battering, before adding a majestic second to make it five. Picking up a loose ball inside his own half, he had just stepped into the centre circle before putting on his best David Beckham impression, and floating an unerring effort over the keeper.
A notably scrappier third to hand Bayern their eighth of the afternoon means Kane takes his Bundesliga tally up to 12 goals in nine appearances, and 14 in total across 12 in all competitions.
Whether those in Germany stick to closely to the traditions of old is unclear, particularly given Kane was pictured with a signed matchball after his first hat-trick against Vfl Bochum towards the end of September.
