Another shock defeat follows yesterday’s Saudi Arabia-Argentina antics as four-time winners Germany fell to defeat in their opening World Cup fixture with Japan.
Flashbacks of the nightmare in 2018 will be rushing through every Germany fan’s head right now, with Die Mannschaft the most recent team to suffer the ‘winner’s curse’ of crashing out in the group stage.
By their lofty standards, Germany also succumbed to defeat early on in their European Championship campaign against England in the Round of 16, so the pressure to reach the latter stages in Qatar has intensified immeasurably.
Germany Lose Their Opening Game Against Japan
Having taken the lead little after the half hour mark courtesy of an Ilkay Gundogan penalty, Hansi Flick’s side looked as if they had full control over proceedings heading into the break.
However, after failing to make the most of their 26 shots and 74% possession, Japan slowly crept back into contention, picking their moments to venture forward and troubling Manuel Neuer who was forced into making two spectacular saves.

An equaliser in the 75th minute, and a breathtaking near-post winner from Takuma Asano with seven minutes left to play was enough to inflict Germany’s second-consecutive opening game defeat in the World Cup.
This means they have now drifted to 25/1 in the current outright World Cup betting markets having started out as short at 10/1 in the bookies’ pre-tournament.
