With Saturday’s final of the women’s singles confirmed, and the last four of the men’s taking place on Friday, we are taking a deep dive into the latest outright French Open odds to see how bookmakers are weighing up the latter stages.

Women’s Singles

Attempting to decipher the women’s singles winner this year had proved to be a troublesome task for the tour’s keen observers, with three standout competitors dominating 2023 so far.

Perhaps the most notable of which appeared to be last year’s Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, who was forced to withdraw just minutes before her third round match after she reportedly had difficulty breathing.

That has cleared the way somewhat for Iga Świątek, who inevitably arrived in the French capital with the shortest price and all the leading claims after winning here last year, and at just 21-year-old, she boasts two French Open titles and three grand slams in total.

The Poland native relishes the chance to compete on clay, and holds a staggering 18-2 record on this surface so far this year. The 13-time tour winner does however carry the unfortunate burden of being the defending champion – no one has successfully defended their French Open title since Justine Henin in 2007.

The only active women’s player to have won three grand slams, she is already among elite company and remains on course for consecutive French Open finals after yet another straight set victory over one of the tournament favourites Beatriz Haddad Maia in the semi-finals – she is yet to drop a set so far in Paris.

While it may be foolish to bet against her given her iron-clad record on clay, it also may be preferable to take a look at her opponent in the final Karolina Muchova, who prevailed in a fascinating battle with pre-tournament second-favourite Aryna Sabalenka.

The all-court Czech competitor will shoulder all the responsibility to upset the usual order of things in Saturday’s final, and has already surpassed her best ever grand slam finish, previously at last year’s Australian Open.

She enters the contest as the 6/1 underdog however, and faces a tall order if she is to prevent Swiatek from winning her third title here.

Men’s Singles

With no Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros, the rest of the field will have inevitably breathed a sigh of relief with the Spaniard having won five of the last six editions.

His compatriot Carlos Alcaraz has made light work of his opponents thus far, and cruised into the semi-finals after a stomping straight set victory over Stefanos Tsitspas to set up a mouth-watering clash with fellow frontrunner Novak Djokovic.

Despite turning just 20 years of age at the beginning of May, he is the bookmaker’s favourite after dominating the tour for the past two years.

After claiming his first grand slam at the US Open last year, it feels more of a question of ‘how many more’ rather than ‘if.’ He combines all the athleticism of Novak, the determination and grit of Rafa, and the power and precision of Rodger.

A truly terrifying prospect for the rest of the tour, he can absolutely back up his leading claims here and it is hard to pinpoint a weakness in his game. He is yet to hit his best form on clay this year and yet, he still has two titles under his belt. He also crashed out early in Rome which appears to have given him optimal time to prepare physically and mentally.

Novak Djokovic will be hoping to delay the next generation of tennis from taking over for at least another year. Historically this has been his least fruitful grand slam having only won twice, but he is forgiven while Rafael Nadal still walks the Earth.

The Serbian entered the tournament with a mixed bag of form but has since done dispelled any rumours of a fall-off, barely getting out of first fear against Juan Pablo Varillas in the fourth round before a fairly straight-forward win against Karen Khachanov on Tuesday.

You would certainly be crazy to bet against him, as was evident with his Wimbledon triumph last year, followed by another Australian Open in January to move level as the all time grand slam leader with Nadal (22).

Elsewhere, Holger Rune’s rapidly ascending career appeared to have every chance of moving up another gear, but another of this year’s favourites Casper Ruud put on a startling hard-hitting display to advance to the last four in Wednesday’s quarter-final.

Italian Jannik Sinner appeared ready for a first ever major after a spectacular rise to prominence in recent years, but a major second round shock against Daniel Altamaier ended his chances. Second seed Daniil Medvedev also crashed out in the first round to 172nd-ranked Thiago Seyboth Wild, so his and Sinner’s departures have made the pathway to the final that little bit clearer.

French Open Men’s Singles Odds

  • Carlos Alcaraz – 4/6
  • Novak Djokovic – 11/15
  • Alexander Zverev – 8/1
  • Casper Ruud – 10/1
