Everton vs Chelsea Report: Toffees’ Impressive Run Of Form Continues
The hosts entered the game looking to build on their remarkable 3-0 triumph over Newcastle in midweek. Chelsea looked to fix their inconsistent run of form and close the gap between themselves and the European places.
Reece James picked up yet another injury in the first half in an otherwise uneventful opening 45. It’s another hamstring injury for the Chelsea captain, who already spent eight weeks with a similar injury earlier in the season.
Early in the second half, Everton broke the deadlock through Abdoulaye Doucoure, who scored his sixth Premier League goal of the season. It is already the midfielder’s highest-scoring season in an Everton shirt.
Though Chelsea had the majority of possession and created more chances than the Toffees, they never really looked like troubling the hosts, who defended valiantly.
Robert Sanchez was forced off late in the game to create another headache for Mauricio Pochettino. Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic replaced Sanchez, making his Chelsea debut at 24.
Everton secured the points in added time as 20-year-old substitute Lewis Dobbin lashed home his first senior goal for the club to put the game to bed.
There were jubilant scenes at Goodison Park at the final whistle as Everton secured their third consecutive victory. The result also means Sean Dyche ends a run of five consecutive home Premier League losses against Chelsea.
What’s Next For Everton and Chelsea?
Just weeks after a 10-point deduction sent Everton plummeting into the relegation zone, Dyche has guided his men four points clear above the drop zone. The Everton boss prepares his team to face former club Burnley next Saturday.
For Chelsea, however, the defeat as well as results elsewhere mean they drop to 12th in the table. They will hope to put in a much better display when they host bottom-placed Sheffield United next weekend in what feels like a must-win for Pochettino.
