Everton vs Aston Villa (0-0) Report: Goalless On Merseyside As Chances Wasted

It was a scrappy affair at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon and it could have gone either way, however the sides could not be separated after 90 minutes of action. Far from a Premier League classic, both still fought hard but nothing dropped.

Villa thought they’d opened the scoring after 22 minutes through a spectacular Alex Moreno strike, but a lengthy VAR check ruled it out for an offside in the build up. The check took over three-and-a-half minutes before the officials judged winger Leon Bailey to be in an offside position.

Everton could have taken the lead just before half-time, but some heroics from Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez denied both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and James Garner.

The sides headed into the interval at 0-0 with not much separating them.

It was more of the same in the second-half as a couple of half chances came here and there. It was then the Toffees’ turn to have the ball in the back of the net when Abdoulaye Doucoure fired past Martinez on the 88th minute, but the linesman’s flag went straight up.

This was the first 0-0 draw in Unai Emery’s tenure in the Premier League, with it taking 97 top-flight games for a side of his to record such result, also meaning that Villa couldn’t move onto level points with Liverpool.

It was also just the third time that the West Midlands side have failed to score this season, with the other two occasions coming in defeats to Nottingham Forest and Liverpool.

What Next For Everton & Aston Villa?

Everton are back in action on Wednesday night (17th Jan) and face Crystal Palace in an FA Cup third round replay before a 13-day winter break before a trip to West London to take on Fulham.

As for Aston Villa, their next game is also an FA Cup tie, but it is in the fourth round against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the 26th January, with a return to league action four days later.
