England’s Cole Palmer says his summer switch to Chelsea is already ‘paying off’ after he was promoted from the U21 side to Gareth Southgate’s senior squad on Monday.

Palmer has been a huge hit on Stamford Bridge so far this season and he, alongside Rico Lewis and Ezri Konsa, were drafted in to replace the injured trio of James Maddison, Lewis Dunk and Callum Wilson.

“Who knows what would have happened had I stayed at Manchester City, maybe I would have played more, maybe not. But the decision to move to Chelsea, so far, is paying off,” Palmer said in a recent interview.

The 21-year-old went on to say ahead of the Malta and North Macedonia clashes: “I’m going to try to make the biggest impact possible, by creating chances and hopefully scoring. I’d love to go to the Euros, but I’ve got to play well at club level first.”

Cole Palmer For Chelsea

Much has been made of Chelsea’s exuberant transfer policy over the last two windows and perhaps a few eyebrows were raised when Cole Palmer joined Mauricio Pochettino’s side for a reported £42.5m from Manchester City. Palmer was certainly not a regular under Pep Guardiola but he had made a strong start to the 2023/24 campaign, scoring in both the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup for the Cityzens.

Since departing the blue half of Manchester for west London, Palmer has not only forced his way in to Pochettino’s strongest starting XI but has chipped in with two assists and four goals across nine Premier League appearances this season. Granted, all his goals have come from the penalty spot but that is certainly something that could prove at international level.

Cole Palmer For England

Euro 2024 may be a slight long shot for Cole Palmer but it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility. If afforded an opportunity and he impresses against Malta and/or North Macedonia, Gareth Southgate will certainly consider him for the 23-man England squad next summer but competition for places is naturally fierce. The likes of Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Conor Gallagher are essentially guaranteed their spots but if Palmer’s stock continues to rise, he’ll be hard to ignore.

England have fixtures booked in against Belgium and Brazil in March 2024 which will likely provide a solid platform for Palmer to further stake his claim ahead of the Euros, should he play and impress against two of the best nations in world football, he may want to cancel any holiday plans he has for June 2024.
