Former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy thinks Everton manager Sean Dyche should take part of the blame for Amadou Onana’s costly penalty miss in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final.
Onana missed a decisive penalty that would’ve sent Everton into the semi-finals of the League Cup. Rather than putting his foot through it, Onana’s penalty was tame, lethargic, and far too easy for goalkeeper Bernd Leno to stop.
Football pundit Danny Murphy shared his thoughts about the missed penalty and hinted at blaming Onana’s manager, Sean Dyche, for not preparing his players for taking penalties properly.
Murphy scored 18 of his 19 penalties taken in the Premier League, with his only miss coming against Joe Hart for Manchester City when he was playing for Fulham.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy expressed his opinion, stating, “As a coach, I think you should know which players are going to do what on what penalty. That’s the way I was brought up with coaches.”
He continued, “As a manager, I would want to know what you are going to do if you get a pen. Don’t change your mind. Let’s practise it now and stick to it.”
He said, “It didn’t look like any prep had gone into those pens. And some people say you can’t prep—I get the pressure—I’ve been there, but you can prep players who aren’t used to taking pens to stick with what they’re going to do.”
Onana’s pivotal penalty miss denies the Toffees the chance to win silverware for the first time since 1995, hence the widespread frustration from the Everton fans.
