Chelsea striker Christopher Nkunku could make his long-awaited debut against Newcastle United in tonight’s Carabao Cup clash.
The Frenchman moved to Stamford Bridge in the Summer from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig but is yet to feature in the Premier League. He was on the bench as Chelsea beat bottom club Sheffield United 2-0, though Nkunku did not play.
But Manager Mauricio Pochettino said he hoped Nkunku can now get a ‘feel’ of English football, and kick on for the remainder of the season.
Pochettino added: “It’s a big motivation for us, for his team-mates, and the fans to see a player that should be important for us being in the squad for the first time.
“It’s very good news for us and it’s time to be calm and quiet because we don’t want to put the pressure on him.”
Nkunku scored 16 goals in 25 league games in Germany last season and Chelsea will be hoping he can add some much-needed firepower to their lacklustre attack.

The 26-year-old striker suffered a knee injury in pre-season. During a friendly match against Borussia Dortmund in Chicago, Nkunku damaged the meniscus in his left knee, and was forced off in the first half as the sides drew.
He was injured during a challenge with Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, as fans prayed it was just a small knock. Surgery followed, with Chelsea’s worst fears realised – they would be without their new man for several months.
But with Nkunku on the bench against Sheffield United, it’s hoped he’s now back to fitness and ready to get his Blues career going.
The 10-cap French international impressed before his injury in pre-season, scoring three goals in five games.

Christopher Nkunku’s Chelsea arrival was hotly anticipated. He was Pochettino’s first signing after taking over at Stamford Bridge in May, and arrived with a great deal of attention.
The forward has scored 95 goals in 294 senior appearances – also providing 66 asssits.
Coming through the academy at Ligue 1 side PSG, he spent five years of first-team football with the Parisians. But it was at RB Leipzig that his career really took off.
Nkunku joined the German outfit ahead of the 2019/20 season. During his three years there, he would score 70 goals in 172 games, with 56 assists.
It was his 23 goals and nine assists in all competitions last season that earned him the move the Chelsea. Fans will be hoping he can now finally make his mark in the Premier League.

With Chelsea lacking finishing prowess up front, Nkunku could be the key that unlocks opposition defences. He is a proven goalscorer, and could be like a brand new signing right before the January window opens.
