Chelsea vs Newcastle Report: Late Mudryk Equaliser Saves Chelsea
The hosts are enduring another underwhelming Premier League campaign, sitting 10th in the table. Some of their better performances have actually come in the EFL Cup this season – a trophy that they’ve lifted five times.
Newcastle were runners-up in last year’s competition, having lost to Manchester United in the final, and were hoping to go one step further this time around.
Chelsea had so much of the ball in the first half, but it was Newcastle that posed the greater threat, at least after Conor Gallagher’s early curler hit the crossbar.
That was the closest either team had come before Callum Wilson took advantage of Benoit Badiashile’s hesitancy to run through and fire into the net, putting the visitors 1-0 up at the break.
Mauricio Pochettino turned to Christopher Nkunku after 70 minutes, who finally made his Chelsea debut after missing all season through injury.
The Magpies looked like they had seen the game out, but in the 92nd minute, a costly Kieran Trippier error allowed Mykhaylo Mudryk to steal the ball in the Newcastle box and net the leveller, sending the tie to penalties.
Trippier’s luck was no better from the spot; he blasted his penalty wide of the goal. Djordje Petrovic then saved Matt Ritchie’s penalty to secure the victory for the Blues.
Chelsea can look forward to a two-legged semi-final in the new year, while Newcastle crash out. Before then, Pochettino’s side face Wolves on Sunday after an injury-stricken Newcastle visit Luton Town.
