Chelsea vs Brighton Report: Blues Pick Up Crucial Win
Chelsea came into the match in desperate need of a win, after failing to win their last two Premier League matches against Manchester City and Newcastle.
The Blues got off to a flying start, as Enzo Fernandez scored from close range in the 17th minute and answered recent critics of the Argentinian.
Just four minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead through Levi Colwill, as the England international headed home from a corner kick – scoring against his former side.
Brighton had chances of their own with Evan Ferguson coming close and the Seagulls pulled one back in the 43rd minute – as Facundo Buonanotte scored with a delicious left-footed strike.
Chelsea captain, Conor Gallagher, received his marching orders just two minutes after for a second bookable offence and will miss the next match.
The second-half followed a similar path to the first with Chelsea having the better chances and were rewarded with a penalty in the 62nd minute – after Pascal Gross tripped Mykhailo Mudryk.
Enzo Fernandez slotted the ball past Jason Steele and the Blues doubled their lead with half an hour remaining in the match.
Brighton failed to trouble Chelsea despite a numerical advantage, but provided a late scare in the 92nd minute – as Joao Pedro flicked a header into the top corner.
Chelsea held on to clinch a vital three points and are now 10 points from a Champions League qualification spot.
