Todd Boehly reportedly singled out Chelsea star Raheem Sterling in a dressing room confrontation last April.
What happened between the two?
Boehly wasn’t very amused with Chelsea’s performance in their 2-1 defeat to Brighton last April. He marched into the dressing room after the final whistle and decided to give the Chelsea squad a lecture.
According to The Telegraph, Boehly picked on Sterling first before labelling the team’s six-game winless run as ‘embarrassing’.
He told Sterling that he is a world-class player and could have been delivering more, in terms of performance and leadership.
The 29-year-old cost Boehly £50m in 2022, but by his standards, that’s quite cheap. Sterling is also one of the more senior figures in the squad which might explain why he was called out amongst others.
Sterling has 28 G/A in 68 appearances for Chelsea.
Fans frustrations
Boehly isn’t the only one to question the players’ contributions. Chelsea have regularly been booed off the pitch by their supporters this season. The last time was against Wolves after their disappointing 4-2 defeat.
This was the last time Sterling started for Chelsea and the last time that the Blues lost. They’ve won their last two games and will head to the Etihad in good spirits.
This does ponder the question over Sterling’s ability. He has been replaced on the left by Nicolas Jackson who scored in Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round replay.
Sterling has made cameos off the bench, but it’s unlikely he’ll earn his place back in the starting XI if Jackson and the team are performing.
Sterling’s Euro chances
It’s now unlikely Sterling will get picked for the Euro 2024 squad. His last England appearance was in their 2-1 defeat to France in the World Cup quarter-final. That was in November 2022, which means Sterling has missed the last four England call-ups.
Now he isn’t starting for Chelsea, his dreams of travelling to Germany with the Three Lions in June, are dashed.
