Brentford vs Aston Villa (1-2) Report: Late Drama Sees Villa Claim All Three Points

Aston Villa headed into gameweek 17 enjoying an eight game unbeaten run, most recently besting title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal in the league. The hosts, on the other hand, came into the clash in very poor form – with four defeats in their last five Premier League matches, which included a narrow 1-0 loss to relegation candidates Sheffield United last time out.

Unsurprisingly, it was the visitors who started on top. Unai Emery‘s side created several chances early on in the tie, with Jacob Ramsey and Matty Cash going close to opening the scoring.

Brentford grew into the game though, and after opportunities for Yoane Wissa and Keane Lewis-Potter went astray – the Bees found the opener on the stroke of half time.

Saman Ghoddos’ whipped corner wasn’t dealt with well by the Villa defence, and young Lewis-Potter pounced on the opportunity by prodding home his first ever English top flight goal from around 12 yards out.

The game was fairly open in the second period as the hosts looked to double their advantage and the visitors looked to claw their way back into the clash, but disaster struck for the Bees on the 71 minute mark as Ben Mee was shown his marching orders for a reckless challenge on Leon Bailey.

With a man advantage, the Villans were inspired to turn the game on its head. That’s exactly what they did too, with Alex Moreno heading home the leveller from Bailey’s cross 13 minutes from time.

The comeback would be completed just eight minutes later through none other than Ollie Watkins. The in-form Englishman was in the right place at the right time to head home from Boubacar Kamara’s deft flick from a corner.

A second red card was brandished in added time, as a mini-brawl ensued from Emiliano Martinez and Neal Maupay going head to head. It was the aforementioned Kamara that was sent off, as he appeared to push Ukrainian midfielder Yehor Yarmoliuk.
