Arsenal’s current crop of players are just a couple of months away from a potential first Premier League trophy in 20 years. But where does the current team rank amongst the best Arsenal teams in Premier League history?
Mikel Arteta has turned Arsenal back into a side that’s capable of challenging for the Premier League. Last season, they missed out after struggling to keep pace with Manchester City. This season, they look to have learned from that and might finally end their 20-year wait for a Premier League trophy.
If Arteta’s side were to go all the way and win the Premier League this season, they’d cement themselves as one of the best arsenal teams in the Premier League era. The question is, are they better than the Invincibles or the 1997/98 side that clinched the title ahead of Manchester United? We at SportsLens have ranked the seven best Arsenal teams in the Premier League era.
7. 2007/08 season
Starting our list of the best Arsenal teams is the 2007/08 team. This team felt like the start of a new era for Arsenal, who had sold legendary striker Thierry Henry to Barcelona that summer. Despite losing Henry, the team performed well, finishing on 83 points, but that was only enough to finish third.
With Henry gone, fans were concerned about where the goals would come from. Emmanuel Adebayor, who signed in January 2006 for £3million, scored 29 goals in his first full season.
Cesc Fabregas was another stand-out player this season for Arsenal. Many see this season as the season he became the superstar he was expected to be.
6. 2004/05 season
The season after going unbeaten in the league was always going to be tough. However, Arsenal still managed to get 83 points but were pipped to the title by Jose Mourinho and Chelsea.
The most memorable game from this season came as they beat North London rivals, Spurs, away from home 5-4. The Gunners had five different scorers on the day, Henry, Lauren, Patrick Vieira, Freddie Ljungberg, and Robert Pires.
5. 2022/23 season
The first of two of Arteta’s sides to make our list of the best Arsenal teams. They came so close to winning the league after a long wait without one, but finished five points off Manchester City.
Their youthful squad were a pleasure to watch. But despite all their quality in the season, two defeats in their final four games cost them, showing a lack of title challenge experience. They’ll have taken lessons from this disappointment, lessons that are showing so far this campaign.
4. 1997/98 season
The only pre-2000 team to feature on our list of the best Arsenal teams. This Gunners side won the league, one point ahead of Manchester United. This league win was Arsene Wenger’s first Premier League title.
The team, led by Tony Adams, included stars like David Seaman, Dennis Bergkamp, Vieira, and Marc Overmars. With these stars, they managed to string together an 18-game unbeaten run on their way to claiming a title.
3. 2023/24 season
Third on our list of the best Arsenal teams is the current crop. With the upset of the previous season still running through the players, they appear to have taken their game to another level this season. This has been helped by the clever additions of Declan Rice and David Raya. Arteta will fancy his side’s chances this season.
If they are to win the league, they might find themselves higher up in this ranking of the best Arsenal teams.
2. 2001/02 season
The runners-up on our list is the 2001/02 team. They finished the season with 87 points, which won them the league ahead of Liverpool. Arsenal also won the FA Cup that season.
Amongst the star-studded line-up, it was Henry who made his name known that season. He scored 32 goals in all competitions and became one of the most dangerous attackers in the Premier League.
This team had quality throughout and if it wasn’t for the achievements of the side at number one, they’d be topping this list.
1. 2003/04 season
It’s impossible not to pick the Invincibles as the number one pick for the best Arsenal teams. To go a full season unbeaten in the toughest league in the world is no easy task, not even the great Manchester United or Manchester City sides managed it.
Arsenal picked up 90 points that season after winning 26 games and drawing 12. They finished 11 points above Chelsea and never looked in doubt about winning the league.
Henry again impressed the season, scoring 30 goals in 37 games. The Frenchmen was an established superstar by this point and was unplayable during most of the season.
