Two of the Premier League title contenders, Arsenal and Liverpool, met at the Emirates, with both teams desperate to claim three points. The visitors went down to London knowing a win would extend their lead over Arsenal to eight points, but a defeat would cut it down to two points. All this, plus Man City were yet to play.

Both sets of fans made their voices heard early in the game. However, it was Arsenal who came out of the blocks the strongest of the two. Gabriel Martinelli looked a threat from the start and had the beating of his opposite number early on. He burst down the line and almost found Bukayo Saka’s head but he couldn’t connect.

With just 14 minutes on the clock, Saka managed to this time open the scoring for the North London side. Kai Havertz went through one on one, but his effort was saved only to fall at the feet of Saka who couldn’t miss.

Liverpool, who left Darwin Núñez on the bench, struggled in the first half. They failed to register a shot on target in the first half but levelled through a Gabriel own goal on the stroke of half-time.

Liverpool came out in the second half looking a lot stronger, with Curtis Jones dropping deeper to offer more passing options. They threatened more in the second half, but still only managed one shot on target in the whole game.

With the final 20 minutes approaching, a rare defensive mix up from Virgil van Dijk and Alisson cost Liverpool.  Martinelli chased the ball down, van Dijk blocked the Brazilian, but Alisson failed to connect with the ball and Martinelli tapped the ball home.

As the game was coming to an end, Ibrahima Konaté was sent off for a second bookable offence – leaving Liverpool with just one centre half and 10 men.

Liverpool continued to push for an equaliser, but Leandro Trossard broke through the makeshift Liverpool defence and sneaked the ball under Alisson.

Arsenal players made sure to enjoy every moment after the final whistle as they closed the gap to just two points.

For Liverpool, they’ll be keen to get their star player Mo Salah back to help their title challenge with Arsenal and Man City breathing down their neck.
