Anthony Taylor has been demoted to the Championship after controversially awarding Newcastle a penalty in their last game against Wolves.
What happened against Wolves?
Taylor pointed the spot after it appeared Wolves’ Hwang Hee-Chan illegally brought down Fabian Schar in the 18-yard box. On replay, there didn’t appear to be any contact from Hee-Chan who missed Schar’s leg when trying to clear the ball.
VAR didn’t question Taylor’s decision and a penalty was awarded. It’s understood that no action has been taken against the man in VAR which was Jarred Gillett.
What was the response to the penalty?
In his recent press conference Wolves boss Gary O’Neil commented on the demoting of Taylor: “I think that’s three referees who have been relegated to the Championship after taking charge of our games.
“I haven’t had an apology and I don’t want one. A better level of refereeing is needed, there are too many mistakes. We’re all held to high standards – the players are and I am.”
After the game, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe gave his verdict on the decision: “With the long delay, you knew it was a tight call.”
Wolves fans chanted ‘Premier League – corrupt as f*** ‘ after the penalty had been awarded.
Unfortunately, it’s not the first time Wolves have been hard done by VAR decisions this season. In the opening game of the season, Wolves felt they should’ve had a late penalty after goalkeeper Andre Onana clattered into one of their players.
Also against Luton, Wolves felt Jean-Richer Bellegarde shouldn’t have been shown a red card that made Luton play the majority of the match with 10-men. They also couldn’t believe Luton received a penalty for something very minimal.
What is Taylor’s next match?
Anthony Taylor’s next match will be in the Championship tomorrow. He’ll be heading down to Deepdale to referee Preston V Coventry.
He isn’t the only Premier League referee to be sent down to the Championship this season, Adrian Holmes was forced to officiate Millwall against Hull in October. This came after incorrectly deeming Luis Diaz’s goal offside when Liverpool played Spurs in late September.
