Anthony Martial is set to become a free agent in the summer as Manchester United are looking to part ways with the striker after nine years at the club.
Why are Manchester United not renewing Martial’s contract?
Despite Erik Ten Hag insisting that the club is working to extend Martial’s contract, talkSport have reported that it won’t mount to anything and that Martial will leave the club in the summer.
Martial’s Manchester United career has been underwhelming. The Red Devils signed Martial back in 2015 for £50m and he showed real quality early on in his career. He scored 14 goals in his first but has had dips in quality since.
Injuries haven’t helped Martial’s cause as he’s often struggled with his hip, knee and hamstring. He’s often been absent in the Manchester United teams.
Martial has missed the last month due to illness and it doesn’t look like he’ll be returning to the squad any time soon.
Martial’s goal struggles
His best season came in the 2019/20 campaign; he scored 22 goals. He also made the most appearances that season with 43.
Overall, Martial has scored 63 goals for Manchester United in his nine-year spell which is underwhelming to say the least.
Forwards haven’t impressed all season for Manchester United but in 19 appearances, Martial has just the one goal. This makes him quite the disposable player in the United squad.
Are there other players set to leave?
Raphael Varane is set to leave the club in the summer despite Manchester United trying to extend his contract with a short-term deal. It’s been clear that Varane wants to leave the club in the summer. Joining a big club like Manchester United seemed like a good move from Real Madrid but it’s not been as Varane would’ve hoped with just one trophy in the three years he’s been at the club.
The Frenchman joined in 2021 and now he looks like he’ll be heading out the door with his national teammate Martial.
