Leicester Racecourse Fixtures & Events
The sport of horse racing in and around the city of Leicester dates back at least until the end of the Tudor period. Abbey Meadow and St Mary’s Field were early sites for meetings, but Leicester Racecourse was initially founded at Victoria Park in 1773. They raced there for the next century, later creating events more valuable in terms of prize money than the Classics established over the following years and decades.
After 110 years at Victoria Park, the track moved to Oadby where Leicester races today are still held. The first meeting on its present site was in July 1883. A dual purpose venue with a longstanding history of both Flat and National Hunt action, one of the most famous jumpers ever made his debut at this race track.
That was Golden Miller, the only racehorse to date to have won both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National in the same season. This great steeplechaser won a hurdles contest at Leicester Racecourse and later returned to the track with a win over fences. Golden Miller is also honoured for five consecutive Gold Cup victories during the 1930s.
An approximate modern era equivalent would be back-to-back Grand National hero Tiger Roll, who made his debut at Market Rasen in Lincolnshire. Leicester races today don’t have any really prestigious or valuable events at the course anymore like the Leicester Gold Cup, Prince Of Wales Stakes and Portland Stakes during its heyday in the late Victorian period.

Configuration of Leicester Races Today
All races at Leicester today on the round course go right-handed around a thin oval with long stretches in the home and back straight with tight turns at both ends of the track. Despite that, there is a surprising emphasis on stamina. This is because of the undulating nature of both the straight course on the Flat and a complete circuit round in either code.
A full lap of Leicester Racecourse is about a mile-and-three-quarters. Sprints up to seven furlongs are on the straight course, which joins the round circuit just over half-a-mile from the winning post. Events on this track are sharply downhill for between the first third and half of races, then uphill for next quarter of a mile before levelling out for the final 300 yards.
There are no contests at Leicester races today on the Flat beyond an approximate mile-and-a-half. The starts for events over that distance, 10 furlongs and a mile are all in the back straight. National Hunt contests start between obstacles. Hurdle races are run on the Flat course with six flights on a complete circuit. Three of those are in the back straight with the same number again to clear after turning for home.
In steeplechases, the track runs inside the Flat course down the back and outside of it once horses take the bend into the home straight. There are 10 fences in all on a complete circuit of Leicester Racecourse. Six of these are in the back straight with four more up the home straight. The second obstacle down each line of fences is an open ditch and the first after the winning post is a water jump.
Key Races at Leicester Today
There’s nothing so grand or valuable as the historic events associated with Leicester Racecourse fixtures from the Nineteenth Century run at the track today, just two Listed races with one for each code. The main event on the Flat is the King Richard III Stakes. Previously known as the Leicestershire Stakes, this seven furlongs contest for older horses on the level uses the straight course and takes place in April.
Over jumps, meanwhile, the other Listed event at Leicester races today is the Charnwood Forest Mares’ Chase over two miles in January. Only inaugurated in 2019, this is one of the newest black type races in the programme. It has quickly picked up sponsorship by Pertemps Network, who also partner a series of staying handicap hurdles that culminate at the Cheltenham Festival in the Pertemps Final.
