Location of La Liga Teams
La Liga is host to a number of derby games and local rivalries. There are several hotbeds of football within Spain and in this section we’re going to take a look at La Liga teams and their cities.
We will go on to discuss the La Liga clubs that play in Madrid and Barcelona. The other big city derby that we will see in La Liga this season is the Seville derby between Real Betis and Sevilla.
Then there are the regional derbies, of which the biggest is the Basque derby between Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao. There are other Basque teams not currently in La Liga, such as Alaves and Eibar, while Osasuna are another nearby club who have some rivalries with these teams.
The Derbi de la Comunitat is the Valencian Country derby between Valencia and Villarreal. Historically it’s Valencia that are the more significant club in Spain, but in recent years it’s often been Villarreal that have been the better team.
La Liga Teams in Madrid
The Madrid derby is contested by Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. This has always been a big fixture, but has become even more significant during Diego Simeone’s time at Atletico Madrid, during which they have been battling with Real for major honours. The rivals even met in the Champions League final in both 2014 and 2016.
Getafe are another top flight team based in Madrid. Historically their biggest rivalry is with Leganes, but with that side currently in the Segunda División, Getafe’s most important games are with Real and Atletico. The fourth Madrid based club are Rayo Vallecano, who have minor rivalries with all of the other Madrid sides.
Here are the clubs from Madrid, past and present, that have competed in La Liga.
