Jurgen Klopp announced that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season after eight years in charge of the club. There have been rumours that Pep Guardiola will follow suit, but are those rumours true?
Is Guardiola leaving Manchester City?
Guardiola has not officially confirmed when he will leave Manchester City, but in an interview from 2021 he revealed he would leave at the end of his contract. Guardiola – who holds a fascination with Brazil – dreams of managing an international team.
He said: “Next step will be a national team, if there is a possibility. A national team is the next step.
“After seven years on this team, I think I’m going to have a stop. I’m going to have to take a break, see what we’ve done. And in the process, I would like to train a South American [team], European [national side], playing a Copa América – I want to have that experience.”
However, Guardiola signed a two-year contract extension in 2022, which keeps him at the club until 2025. Next season could well be Guardiola’s last with Manchester City.
Guardiola’s legacy
Guardiola joined Manchester City in 2016 – replacing Manuel Pellegrini. It took Guardiola a season to get settled in but, he since transformed them into serial winners, lifting an abundance of domestic and international honours with City.
He won his first trophy with City in the League Cup in 2017/18. Guardiola has won five Premier League titles, the FA Cup twice, and the League Cup four times.
Not that he had anything to prove by conquering the Premier League, but Guardiola has taken his tally up to 33 titles in 14 years as a manager, making him one of the most decorated coaches in history.
The 53-year-old has said that his time at Manchester City wouldn’t feel complete without winning the Champions League. Those worries were put to bed last season as Manchester City lifted the Champions League trophy for the first time in the club’s history.
‘Old big ears’ topped off an incredible treble-winning season for Manchester City.
